Arthur Hiatt Obituary

ARTHUR A. HIATT April 5, 1934 April 17, 2007 Those of us who had the pleasure and privilege of knowing Art would surely use words such as loving, intelligent, strong, generous and funny to describe him. He was a loving and dear husband, a supportive and caring father, a kind and fun grandfather, a creative and nurturing teacher, an inspirational mentor, and above all, a sincere and loyal friend. Art was born in Atascadero but spent most of his early years in San Jose. He attended San Jose High School and went on to earn a BS degree in 1956 and an MS degree in 1964 in mathematics from San Jose State University. Art was able to pursue his two passions of teaching and track by teaching math and coaching track at Wilcox High School in San Jose. In 1969, Art earned his doctorate in Mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley. In total, Art dedicated 38 years of his life to teaching mathematics to both students and teachers of mathematics, retiring as a Professor of Mathematics at California State University, Fresno in 1994. Art received numerous awards for his teaching throughout his career, but he often stated that his greatest honor was to be able to work with hundreds of young people throughout his life. Art was an excellent athlete; track was his passion. He was encouraged to join the track team when he was a sophomore in high school and he went on to become the North Coast 100 yard champion as a junior and the 220 yard champion as a senior, holding the record time for that distance. Art competed at the collegiate level while at San Jose State, earning the rank of fifth fastest in the world in the 220 and sixteenth fastest in the world in the 440. We who knew him will miss him dearly, but we take comfort in and treasure the fond memories we have of him. He touched so many lives that his memory will surely live on. A wise man once said, "The only thing we take with us when we leave this earth is the person we have been." We who knew and loved Art will know that he takes a great deal with him. Art died at his home in Cambria, surrounded by the loving care of his wife Diana, and his daughter Suzie. Art will be cremated and his ashes will be dispersed in the ocean he loved to admire from his home. There will be no Memorial Service. I was blessed to have been a student of Art’s, during my years at Wilcox. He did his best to teach me Mathematics. We transitioned from a student/teacher relationship to that of being friends, as we both enjoyed years and years of Wilcox High School reunion events. He claims I helped him learn to write poetry. I think he had “the touch” all along. He was a quick wit with a genuine touch of sincerity. Art had a wide knowledge of many subjects. And he loved sharing his wisdom, and we all loved drinking it in. Like Gary Sergianni, I, too, struggled with words to write to Art, once I learned of his illness. But any phrases I shared, he accepted with warmth and grace. In one of our last exchanges, I told Art that he always spent more time with those who needed help, not just his super stars; a philosophy I teach in each and every management class I present, to this day. Below is the last poem I wrote for Art, surprisingly on his birthday, which I did not know at the time. The world will miss him; I miss him. Love, Allen Weitzel

Where Will You Find Me?

Where will you find me?
Not sure I know anymore,
where I am, or where I’ve been.
My paths are laced with
those I’ve known and loved.
Find them; they will lead you to me.
Mostly I’m here....
Waiting.

I never had Art Hiatt for a teacher at Wilcox, but it really impressed me that he would come to our reunions. He has attended more reunions than I have! I am only sorry that I didn't know him better. He was a geat guy!!

Art was one of the first teachers I encountered when my family moved to Santa Clara from rural western Maryland at the beginnng of my sophomore year in 1961, the year Wilcox opened. He was a teacher respected by many. He will be missed.

I had known that Art was very ill, but I wasn't sure what to say to him, so a few days before his passing I sent him an email. Basically it said: I have good memories and thank you (for being such a great teacher). All the best always.... He responded, shifting the attention from himself: "I can still hear your beautiful voice...." I say: that's
class....Ciao Art... maybe you can show the angel's how they get from point A to point B...

Art was an excellent teacher and he was always very enthusiastic about Mathmatics when he taught us at Wilcox High School. He was an inspiration to many of his students. Our Class of 1964 was the first graduating class and Art always tried to attend every reunion we had. He kept in touch with so many of us over the years. He had the most wonderful sense of humor and we will all miss him very much.
