Barbara Aydelotte Obituary

BARBARA JEAN AYDELOTTE Barbara Jean Aydelotte passed away on Friday, August 25, 2006, at Willow Creek in Clovis, California, at the age of 82. She was born in Fresno on June 26, 1924, to Clarence and Bama Newton. Barbara graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1942, and was a proud member of the Roughrider Marching Band. It was during WWII that she met her future husband, U.S. Army Air Corps Sergeant Charles Aydelotte, while playing the piano in church. They married in 1944. They had three children, Charlene, Mark and Teri. In addition to being a homemaker, she was secretary at Memorial Baptist Church. Barbara loved music and served as church pianist for Memorial and Harvard Terrace. She and Chuck loved morning walks in Woodward Park, her cabin in Wilsonia, and being with her family. She is survived by her sister, Mabel Shults of Montecito; her daughters, Charlene Schmidt and Teri Varvis; and her son Mark, all of Fresno. She has six grandchildren, Matthew, Rebekah, Elise, Katelyn, Ryan and Nathan. A Memorial Service will be held at Boice Chapel in Clovis on Thursday, August 31, 2006, at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Clovis Cemetery.

Dear Aydelotte Family:

We remember Barbara back in the "good ol' days" when she was editor of "The News Notes" and "a good time was had by all". We always loved reading that line-because it was always true! We will remember Barbara with fondness and look forward to seeing her again. So many of the pillars that we knew have gone on. Chuck and Barbara were just such pillars for us to look up to and emulate. Even though these are joyous days for her, it is still hard to lose a parent. Our thought and prayers are with you all. Thank you to all who have left messages here. I was asked by several people for the text of my comments from Barbara's service today. Here is that text: "From my family, from my sister Charlene and I, thank you all for celebrating Barbara’s life. In the last years of her life I would always tell my Mom that she was my hero. I watched her struggle for years with Parkinson’s Disease…as she lost the ability to drive, play the piano, to walk, comb her hair…and then, even losing the ability to speak. Throughout all of that her faith in Christ remained strong, her smile and laugh were always there, her love for her family…always secure. She faced a terrible disease that would likely crush the spirit of most of us. And while our mother was an amazingly strong woman, I know she persevered because of her faith. She knew that the end of her story here on earth wasn’t sad…but joyous. She knew that her Savior and her friend, Jesus Christ, would hear her prayers, would rescue her from her suffering here, and reunite her forever with her husband Chuck, her parents and her family in Heaven. She had no doubts. Nor do I.

But the last years of her life aren’t the main reason I called my Mom a hero. Mom’s strength of character was consistent throughout her life. She made sure that all of her children shared her faith…and provided gentle guidance for all of us. She wanted her children to experience life…whether it was going on a camping trip in a downpour, learning music and playing in the marching band (even when we didn’t want to), traveling across the country in a dubiously running Buick, or going on to college. She was always there to encourage us through difficult times and to celebrate the good times. She loved her church family and was proud to be the Editor of “The News Notes”…the church newsletter. She knew everyone, and everyone knew and loved her.

She was quick to help in anyone’s time of need and was a great friend to many. I know those of you who knew Barbara would agree she was quick to serve and reach out to help others. Christ said: “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” Throughout her life, Barbara sacrificed her time… her treasure … herself … for others. That’s why my Mom is my hero. That’s why I will always be proud to be Barbara Aydelotte’s son."
