Betty was born on June 6, 1922, in Oelwein, Iowa, to Vincent and Daisy Cusack. She passed away on Saturday, February 9, 2008, in Fresno, California.
Betty moved with her parents and sister, Mary Louise to Fullerton, California, where she attended high school, and then to Corvallis, Oregon, where she attended college. After two and a half years of college, Betty enlisted in the United States Navy in May of 1943, and served during wartime until November 1945. She married Harry Comstock on September 18, 1946. They had three daughters, Chris, Leslie and Susan. They moved frequently as the Navy ordered.
Betty and her daughters finally settled in Fresno in 1959, where she went to work for Rhodes (later Liberty House) until they closed the Fresno location in 1986. After that she volunteered her bookkeeping abilities at both Fresno Community Hospital and Our Lady of Victory Church. She spent her retirement years loving and doting on her grandchildren and being her three daughters' advisor, supporter and best friend. To say she will be deeply missed does not begin to say what we feel.
She was preceded in death by her father, Vincent Cusack; mother, Daisy Calkins-Jakway; adoptive father, Wilfred Calkins; sister, Mary Lou Hornsby; and great-niece, Alicia Hornsby; who she has now joined in heaven.
Mom, we will all miss the sanity-saving phone conversations and 411 memory.
Surviving family members who will love her forever and hold her in their hearts are daughter, Chris Comstock; daughter and son-in-law, Leslie and Garry Elliott; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Mike Avina; sister-in-law, Jane McGuire; and former son-in-law Carlos Rodriguez. She is also survived by grandchildren, Jennifer Bakula-Elliott, Amanda Rodriguez, Joshua Avina, Nicholas Avina, Alexandria Avina and Samantha Avina; nephew, Rick Hornsby and his wife Karla, and their daughter, Robin; niece, Linda Driver and her husband John, and their daughter, Julie; niece, Kathleen Booth; and great-nephew Bronson Booth; and niece, Michelle Farmer and her husband Michael.
A Rosary will be recited at Our Lady of Victory Church on Tuesday, February 19, 2008, at 7:00 p.m.
A Funeral Service will be held at St. Peter's Cemetery on Wednesday, February 20, 2008, at 10:00 a.m.
