Clovis, California - Early Thursday morning, December 1st, 2022, Cathy Rae Douglas, loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, passed away at age 79.
A midwestern farmer's daughter, Cathy Rae Stock was born May 28th, 1943, in Howard, South Dakota, a small but still bustling farming community in the heart of eastern South Dakota. The oldest of three, she was the self-appointed boss of her younger sister and brother. Cathy attended Monroe District #31 Country Elementary School, a one-room schoolhouse for students grades one through eight, and was part of the 28-student Howard High School graduating class of 1961.
After high school, Cathy attended Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen, SD. In 1968, she moved to California, where she met and eventually married Ben Douglas on December 17th, 1971. She accepted his two children as her own and "was an amazing stepmom." In 1973, their first child, Kenneth, was born, and Jeremy followed soon after in 1977. Cathy devoted much of her life to being a wife and a stay-at-home mom. As her children got older, however, she carved out a fruitful career for herself, working for the federal government.
Active in her church, she served as a Lay Deacon for University Presbyterian Church and treasurer for the "Clippers," a church fellowship group that gathered together for devotion and fellowship. She was also an avid knitter, participating in a needlepoint group at Clovis-based Janna's Art Needle shop for over 20 years, often knitting scarves, beanies, and socks as Christmas gifts. As an avid reader, she volunteered at the local library. And, she and Ben routinely finished the daily crossword together... in pen, no less!
Cathy is survived by her husband, Ben; siblings, Linda, and Larry; children, Jeffrey, Pamela, Kenneth, and Jeremy; grandchildren, Brian, Lindsay, Grace, Sam, Spencer, and Walker; Sisters-in-law Marna and Deb; and niece, Jodi.
A celebration of Cathy's life is being held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, December 10th, at University Presbyterian Church, 1776 E Roberts Ave, Fresno, CA 93710. There will be a reception and light refreshments following the service.
