David Schoettler Obituary

David Richard Schoettler, of Madera, Ca., passed away on Monday, April 21, 2008, after a long courageous battle with cancer. Dave Schoettler owned and operated Schoettler Tire and Central Cal Tire with his brother Tom, with several locations throughout Central and Northern California. Dave was born in Fresno, Ca., on September 13, 1933, to Harold and Loretta Schoettler. He attended San Joaquin Memorial High School and graduated from Madera High School in 1951. He excelled in many sports including track, football, and basketball. After high school, Dave attended University of California, Berkeley. He served as president and active member of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. He also played basketball for the Golden Bears. He graduated in 1955, with a degree in business. Upon graduation, Dave entered the U.S. Air Force where he served as captain of the B-47 Bomber Squadron. Before entering the military, Dave met his future wife, Dwynn Forrester. The two kept in touch through letters during his time away and were married in 1957. They then moved to Homestead, Florida where Dave was stationed. After returning to California in 1959, Dave went to work for the family business. In 1969, he decided to move to Coalinga, Ca., and open a tire shop with partner Clarence Johnson. The business was Coalinga Tire. He also co-founded the Coalinga Pop Warner football league and served as president. The Schoettler family finally settled back home in Madera in 1974. He and brother Tom took over Schoettler Tire, the family business, after their father Hal passed away. Dave served on the board of directors for many tire manufacturers. He was an expert, and many looked up to him in the tire industry. Dave's passion was the tire business, and continued working until his passing. He was also an avid sports enthusiast attending events for Madera, Clovis West, and Buchanan High Schools, Fresno State, and Cal Berkeley. Dave was a booster for Madera High athletics and served as the Grand Marshall for the 1977 Homecoming. But his favorite athletes were his six grandchildren. He never missed a chance to watch them play. He also loved the 49ers. The Schoettler family would like to thank everyone for all the support they have received during this difficult time. Dave is survived by Dwynn Schoettler, his wife of 50 years; son, Matt Schoettler and his wife Denise, their children, Stephen and Kristen; daughter, Julie Newcomb and her daughters, Ashley and Lindsey; son, Eric Schoettler and his sons, Samuel and Daniel; brothers, Harold and his wife Caroline of Huntington Harbor, Ca., Dr. James Schoettler and his wife Eloise of Chevy Chase, Maryland, and Tom and his wife Ila of Madera, Ca.; and sister, Mary Oberti and her husband Gary, also of Madera; and numerous nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at Jay Chapel, Madera, Ca., on Friday, April 25, 2008, at 11:30 a.m. A gathering of family and friends will be held at the Vineyard Restaurant following the service at 1:30 pm. Eric - my deepest sympathy to you and your family. I know you worked side by side with your dad and were moved by the fact that he worked day after day almost forgetting how ill he was. May his strength live within you. God Bless You. T
