Harold Hale Obituary
January 13, 1927 - November 5, 2023
Fresno, California - Harold Boyd Hale, a World War II veteran and servant of Jesus Christ, died Nov. 5 at his home. He was 96.
He was born in Tahlequah, Okla., and moved to California with his parents and two brothers as a child. Immediately after graduating from Dinuba High School in 1945, Hale joined the U.S. Navy.
A seaman first class, Hale was an 18-year-old cook aboard a Navy ship headed for Japan when the war ended. He was honorably discharged from the service in 1946.
Hale married the love of his life, Betty Jean Griggs, in 1949. The couple moved to the Fresno community of Calwa, where two children were born – and where he lived in the same house the rest of his life. Fresno County Supervisor Sal Quintero called him the "mayor of Calwa."
Hale worked for Western Electric Co. for 34 years, traveling across the state installing telephone equipment. An active longtime member of Southern Baptist churches, he volunteered at the Juvenile Justice Campus mentoring teenage boys. He loved gardening and golfing.
He is survived by daughter Sandra James of Fresno, son Richard Hale of Vancouver, Wash., grandchildren Renee White of Fresno, Robert James and Rebecca Stahler of Oklahoma City, Kelly Hale of Salem, Ore., and James Hale of Portland, Ore., along with four great-grandchildren, Ruth Anne White of Fresno, Morrigan McNabb of Portland, Ore., and Jack and Sierra McNabb of Salem, Ore.
