I understood from another pastor that Msgr. Holland has made significant church theology, and though it could possibly be a category for sainthood, Father Holland that I met was more concern about the welfare of the homeless (30 years ago before the politicians talked about it).

I knew him when he was Father Ian. He served as an associate priest at my parish ( St. Victors ) in West Hollywood, California back in the 1970 's. Having served as an alter boy back in the mid sixties at that parish and having served with many different priests father Ian and Father George Bresslin were my favorites. I will always cherish one particular early evening when I happened to hear from the church, the playing of the churches beautiful pipe organ. I was so taken by its incredible music I was helplessly drawn into the church. As I made my way up the stairs to the choir loft I found Father Ian playing that beautiful pipe organ. He smiled at me and continued playing then as he concluded that particular piece he turned to me and said, " Rick...would you like to hear a really beautiful piece of music? " I said of course " absolutely...yes please " he then played for me, " Sheep May Safely Graze " by Johann Sebastian Bach. Thank you, Father Ian for being such a wonderful man and sweet soul. By the way, whenever I hear that piece of music fond memories of that experience shared by us always makes me smile along with tears that follow. I honestly miss you. Rest easy until we meet again I pray.

Msgr. Ian was a wonderful man and priest. I enjoyed visiting him on numerous occasions, and was lucky enough to go sailing with him on his boat. I will miss his homilies at the Thanksgiving Day masses in Fresno, when he would come to visit the Sullivan Family. May his memory be eternal.
