JAMES BYRD Obituary

James "Jim" Lee Byrd, beloved husband, father, and papa, passed away on March 15, 2018. Jim was born on January 14, 1925, in Brusett, MT, to Washington and Cora Byrd. Jim grew up on the family homestead in Jordan, MT, with his five siblings. When World War II broke out, Jim, like many others of this, "greatest generation", answered the call to serve his country. He did so proudly becoming a photographer's mate in the United States Navy. Upon leaving the service, Jim returned to Montana to get his degree in Ag Science from Montana State. While attending school, his little sister, Eva, introduced him to her best friend Helen Killius. They not only liked each other, they fell in love and married in 1950. Helen was the love of his life until the very end. Their love produced two children, Marilynn and Roger. Jim enjoyed a long career as an agricultural pest control advisor in the central valley. In 1978, he realized a lifetime dream of owning his own farm. He and Helen purchased a small pomegranate farm in Madera, CA. He farmed his pomegranates for 36 years, until at age 89, he decided it was time to retire. Jim was a big tease to his family and friends, especially to his little sister Eva. Jim always treasured and appreciated the many friendships and relationships he made through his work and farming. He was ethical as the day is long and as good as they come. He was always happiest when he could roam free and not feel confined, just as he was as a boy on the beautiful eastern plains of Montana. He is survived by his wife Helen; daughter, Marilynn Byrd; son, Roger Byrd and his wife Susie; grandsons, Adam Byrd, and Alec Byrd and his wife Elizabeth; sister, Eva Fair; and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the following for their kind services in taking care of Jim, Saint Agnes Medical Center; Saint Agnes Hospice; Sierra Vista Healthcare; San Joaquin Gardens; and Wildrose Funeral Home. Jim was laid to rest in a private ceremony at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella, CA, on March 26, 2018. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. "Until we meet again". Rest in peace Papa Byrd. Adam and Alec were so lucky to have you as a grandpa. You had a deep love for your family and served them well. So many memories when the Simon kids and Adam were little ones. You had that teasing sense of humor that was so enjoyable. I know you are deeply missed. God speed.
