The family moved to Fresno when James was two years old. He attended St. John School during his elementary years, graduating from Central Union High School in 1932 where he had participated in football, basketball, baseball and track lettering in all of them. James was offered a scholarship playing football and basketball from St. Mary's College, but refused it to go to work on the ranch. Jim later worked for Penny-Newman and Northrup-King Seed from 1940-1948. He went to work for Kraft Foods as a warehouse manager in 1948. In 1960, Kraft closed the Fresno warehouse and joined United Grocers. Jim went with them until his retirement in 1978. Jim met Jean Orlando in the summer of 1938. They started dating in January 1939 and were engaged in July of 1939. They were married November 26, 1939, and had 54 wonderful years together before Jean passed away, August 26, 1994. James leaves behind his two sons, Richard and wife Michelle, David and wife Terry; daughter, Barbara Dunn and husband Lou; granddaughter, Kelly Ann (Cavanaugh) Vierra and husband Chris, grandsons, Cary and Chris Dunn and great-grandchildren, Katie and Ryan Vierra.
