Jim was my instructor and friend in 1961. On one occasion he was trying to get me to advance the throttle before closing the carb heat on go arounds at National City. The third time I started to do it in reverse he slapped my hand and then lectured me half way down the runway and then calmly advanced the throttle and took off in the remaining runway. I never did it wrong again. With fond memories.

Always enjoyed our chats about flying when Jim was sitting on his porch opposite our home on the Highlands. Being from England and a pilot of lesser experience I could only wonder at what Jim had accomplished in his flying career. My wife, Sheila, and I send our deepest sympathy to Ruth, Jim Jr, and the rest of the family.
God Bless

Uncle Jim and Aunt Ruth and my cousins were always kind and loving when we visited. I remember spending some week-ends with them at their cabin in Big Bear when Brian was very young. And several years ago when Rich and I were able to spend some time in San Diego we enjoyed spending time with the Hawns. The times we spent together were special.

I have a wonderful memory of the time when Uncle Jim landed a twin engine plane at the very small airport near our hometown. It was the first time such a plane had ever landed there and naturally he made quite an impression! In fact, I'm certain that my mom (Jim's baby sister) and dad became way more cool in town after this!
The Hawn family reunion held at Uncle Jim and Aunt Ruth's place in San Diego when I was twelve was great fun and also created many treasured memories. The Rose Parade, Knott's Berry Farm, the dune buggy ride through the mud with cousin Judy are just a few.
As a child, I always looked forward to the visits from my mom's "California" brother. Such a loving and cool and gentle man.
With much love,

Dearest Uncle Jim,
You are going to be missed so much by your family and by all the people that knew you. The generosity you and your family showed when the Hawn clan descended on San Diego for our last reunion was so touching and meant so much to those of us who were able to attend. You were still driving your motor home around and welcoming all to enter and take a seat. It's hard to picture you driving anything other than that big rig.
On the other hand, when you left the ground and went up in the sky, you piloted all different sorts and sizes of aircraft. What an amazing career in aviation you had, even inspiring your younger sister Dorothy (my mom) to become a pilot.
I cannot recall you without a smile on your face – or at least one very close to the surface. You will be remembered for your warm smile, your friendly personality, and your great bear hugs!
With much love,
Karen McClurg and Doug Cressler

When Jimmy called to tell me his father had passed I was really hit hard emotionally. Our dear Uncle Jim was a tremendous brother to our mother, and he was an equally terrific Uncle. Always the positive influence on the family, through his actions as well as his words. We know by his actions throughout his life that his place in Heaven is secure. His new method for flying no longer requires and engine. RIP Uncle Jim, we love you.

Remembering my "Uncle Jim" with much love. He and Merle, his older brother who was my Dad, had great fun teasing each other.
It was wonderful to visit with him and Ruth and other family at the Hawn Reunion a few years back. Love and Hugs to you all.

I'll always remember the wonderful hugs I would get from your Dad and from Mom too-they were a wonderful part of my memories. I'm so sorry for the earthly good-bye but so grateful to know that life is eternal and that Jim has but gone on ahead and will be there to greet each of you again. Much love and hugs! Sandy Hefferon

Jim was/is a great pal of my cousin, Vince Davies. The shared their great love of flying. I will never forget how kind and inclusive Jim was with me even tho I was tadpole. Might be almost 8 years ago at the Davies home, and there was Jim, with his usual smile, and big grip, with a hug. Thanks Jim! Terry Van Orshoven

Jim was a kind, loving, respected, funny, devoted, caring, enduring, loyal, outrageous, steadfast, strong, and all around dear man and a friend to all who were lucky enough to know him. We are all richer for having had him touch our lives. He and Ruthie shared a long and enduring love that speaks volumes about the quality and commitment of that relationship. He loved to help Ruthie share her gift of music and was always there to turn down her gain or get her a glass of champagne. A true loving spirit was Jim. He will always be in our hearts. With love and affection, Sherry Jasperson.
