Joe Aranaz, who recently celebrated his 100 year birthday, died peacefully at home on Saturday, February 7, 2015. He was born in Fresno to Lorenzo Aranaz and Cecelia Erro, on December 25, 1914.
Joe served his country as a forward artillery observer in the European Theater under General George Patton from 1942 to 1945. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded a Bronze Star for valor.
Joe began his career with the Fresno Fire Department in 1941, which he resumed following his military service. Joe was promoted to Fire Engineer in 1946, and retired after 32 years with the FFD.
Bilingual in Spanish and English, Joe served as a medical and legal interpreter for 25 years following his FFD retirement.
Joe was known for being a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. He had strong core values and an acerbic wit.
Joe was preceded in death by his loving wife of 72 years, Jean (Paladino) Aranaz.
He is survived by his daughter, Janet Mattson and her husband John; his son, Joel Aranaz and his wife Juanita; his grandchildren, Matt and Elisabeth Treadway, Carey, Kelly and Julie Aranaz; his step-granddaughter, Jessica Jordan and her husband Chris, and their children, Brian and Katie. He is also survived by his older sister, Fermina Harvey; and his sister-in-law, Phyllis Provenzano.
The family would like to thank his dedicated caregivers, Pat and Dina.
A Graveside Service will be held at Fresno Memorial Gardens on Friday, February 13, 2015, at 2:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the donor's favorite charity.
