KURT HUDSON Obituary

Kurt was born in Porterville CA on October 28, 1956, and passed away in Fresno CA on September 7, 2015. Kurt was the oldest of three sons who grew up in an Air Force family which caused frequent moves to adjust to new schools, including three years in Japan. Attending three different high schools didn't hurt Kurt's grades since his test scores were top tier as in 98% on his SAT scores. Kurt had loved reading and mathematics since his early days in school and had already taught himself math beyond college freshman level. He attended Junior College but lost interest in school when he knew more than the instructors were giving. He went to work as a metal construction worker for a few years before deciding to join the Navy qualifying for Nuclear Power Technician training. After a number of strenuous technical schools Kurt spent three years instructing at the Navy's Nuclear Power Prototype facility in Idaho Falls, ID. He recalled Idaho as being okay if you could get used to the two seasons of winter and August. When Kurt's enlistment was up the Navy offered a promotion but he decided he didn't want that life since he was now married and wanted to finish college. With his degree and teaching credential from Fresno State University, Kurt spent the rest of his life teaching math at Fresno High and later Cambridge High Continuation School. He really enjoyed teaching at Cambridge because he had an opportunity to save students who were on their last chance. Kurt was a loyal fan of Fresno State Bulldogs and San Francisco 49ers. In baseball it was SF Giants and anybody who beat the Dodgers. Kurt loved fishing with his dad and brothers and his love for ocean fishing caused him to request to be cremated and have his ashes spread over the ocean out of Morro Bay. He is survived by his parents Robert (Rock) and Ann Hudson of Fresno; brother Blake and wife Kelli Hudson of Fresno, brother Doug Hudson of Woodland CA; and nieces and nephews Hillary and Oliver Graf, and Tyler, Zack, Cameron and Shelbi, all Hudson's along; with his great nephew Hudson Graf. There will be a celebration of life for Kurt at his parent's house 7318 W. Bullard Ave, Fresno, CA on Saturday October 24, 2015, with a barbecue at 4:00 p.m.

I didn't get to work with Kurt as often as I would have liked, but he was always my first hire every summer at Sunnyside. I could count on "The Good Looking Hudson" (that's what he MADE me call him) to give me a heap of grief about his class size--threatening to quit summer school if I didn't lower his class size before the session started. Then, in true Hudson style, summer school would start and he would willingly accept EVERY KID I sent his way---topping his classes at 50 many times. Why? Because he was a caring, generous soul who couldn't help but be there for any student who needed a chance....an opportunity....someone to believe that they could be successful. I gave Kurt my most "at risk" students and they made it every time.

I will miss joking with him. I will miss his smile. I hope he rests in peace knowing that he changed the lives of hundreds of students......all for the better.....because he took the time to care for them.
