MARY MCCAFFREY Obituary

Mary Louise McCaffrey, a longtime Fresno resident, teacher, author and mentor, passed away on Tuesday, March 15, 2010. She was a loving daughter and sister; a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother; and a caring and nurturing friend. Born on May 6, 1925, and raised in Stamford, Connecticut, she left home in her late teens to join family in California. In 1945, she met a handsome blue-eyed American soldier, Cyril McCaffrey in Palm Springs. Married shortly thereafter, they moved to Bakersfield where they raised their sons on the family farm and shared 37 happy years. When her sons were in school, she earned her teaching credential and Masters Degree. She taught for nearly 30 years, many at Mettler Elementary. A dedicated, kindhearted and encouraging teacher, always willing to go the extra mile for her students, Mary Lou touched many lives. In 1990 after Cyril's passing, she moved to Fresno and embarked upon a new career as an author and mentor to aspiring authors. She wrote a book, "A Handful of Sand" and was honored with several writing awards. For Mary Lou, family always came first. One of her greatest thrills was watching her sons, Michael and Robert, play football at CAL and USC respectively, the College All-Star Game, then go on to become starting players in the NFL. Full of life, her generous and bright spirit graced our lives. We will miss her witty charm and keen mind. The family would like to thank Angels Landing Senior Home Care for their loving and compassionate care of our mother. Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents, Nils Hokanson and Martha Axelson; her husband, Cyril McCaffrey; and infant son, Francis. She is survived by her two sons: Michael and Robert, and Robert's wife, Karen; and two sisters, Betty Hewitt in Medford, Oregon and Susan Kincannon in Charlottesville, Virginia. Also survived by five grandchildren: Darren and Cristine McCaffrey, Megan (McCaffrey) McHenry and Justin McHenry, and Ryan McCaffrey; Brent and Elizabeth McCaffrey, and Lauren (McCaffrey) Knowlton and Ash Knowlton; two great-grandchildren, Ashlyn Mayfield and Braden McCaffrey. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Fresno at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 23, 2010. Remembrances in memory of Mary Louise McCaffrey may be made by donations to Saint Agnes Medical Center-Cancer Center, 7130 North Millbrook Avenue, Fresno, Ca. 93720-3347; or to Catholic Charities, 149 North Fulton Street, Fresno, Ca. 93701. Dear McCaffery Family, Mrs. McCaffrey, as I knew her at Mettler School, will forever be in my memory as the teacher with the smile. She was a blessing to those of us who attended that school and was instrumental in improving so many lives in that area. Thank you for sharing her with us.

To Robert, Mike McCaffrey and Family: I was saddened to learn of the passing of your truly wonderful mother. I was a student of hers in Mettler School from 1965-1968. She was a wonderful teacher who made going to school a fun experience, especially in her reading classes. I will always remember her encouragement and strong support in my pursuit of higher education. I was the first in my family to graduate from a four-year college, and Mrs. McCaffrey was always there offering kind words of support throughout my journey. I read her wonderful book, "A Handful of Sand" last year and I truly enjoyed it. I was once again touched by her reasons for writing this book: She wrote it as a tribute to the many Mexican-American students she taught at Mettler School after she realized there were not much materials detailing the culture and history of their ancestors. I can truly say that my life is richer for having known this wonderful woman, teacher, mentor and friend.

Dear Robert, Karen and Family,

We are so sorry for your loss. We just can’t believe this awful turn of events. I guess in one way, it is good that Marylou did not have to suffer long. But it is still quite a shock to those that loved her, and if you don’t mind, including myself and my mother Bev.
I know we are not your family, but to my mother she was like a sister in many ways. The two of them talked nearly every day and some times many times a day…just letting the other know they were on their way to get their hair, nails or just shopping done. They had a special bond, these two lovely ladies. They referred to each other as each other’s “Pal”.
I know Marylou was a bit lost when my Mother moved here to Idaho to be close to me, and for that I am truly sorry. I know my Mother will be very lost not hearing from her “pal” every day. It will take quite a long time to get past it for all.
I just wanted you all to know how special she was to a lot of people. She had a special way about her…to her pupils, friends, and strangers alike, and I am sure her family. She was loved by all. She was truly a lovely and gracious lady. I don’t think she had a mean bone in her body. She will be missed dearly by those that were blessed to know her.

We wish you all our deepest condolences, love and prayers. God Bless.

To the entire family of Mary Lou,
Please let me tell you from where I'm coming. I worked with her at Standard Oil in Bakersfield for several years. She was a lovely friend, and after my
gorgeous wife Marie Adoree Roux Hicks passed away in 2007, I ran into Mary Lou a couple of times
in Fresno. We talked about how Marie and Patty Shemonick (Sp ?) had such good times when they were both little girls. Pete used to take them out to the ranch, and they had lots of stories to tell about the
animals. What was my connection to your family? Well, while attending KCUHS and Bakersfield Juniior College, ,I worked at the Bakersfield Hardware, and
one of my coworkers was Rudolph Fujan whom I loved and respected. Of course, my bride, Marie was
very close to Mary Lou's family because the Roux Family resided on the corner of Alta Vista and Flower.
The McCaffreys have made quite a mark in the Home
Construction Industry here in Fresno. I'm sure that they are very proud of their record, and I'm also sure
that they are proud of Mary Lou as we all are.
Please accept my deepest, sincere condolences.
