MATTHEW "Matt" MAGGIO

Matthew Anthony Maggio passed away on Wednesday, June 2, 2010, at the age of 81. Matt was born in Fresno, the son of Italian Immigrants from Sicily, Salvatore Maggio and Nina Savona. He grew up in Fresno and was a member of the first graduating class of San Joaquin Memorial High School. Matt proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. Returning to Fresno following his military service, he married Edna Batrum, started his family and began a career in the retail grocery business which spanned 35 years, operating J & M Market on Elm Avenue and later E-Z Save Market at Fresno and Clinton. Matt enjoyed golfing at Belmont Country Club, and was a member of the Grocers Association. Following his retirement Matt and his wife Edna relocated to the Santa Cruz area for 20 years before returning to Clovis where they happily lived in the Woods mobile home park for ten years. Matt is survived by Edna of Clovis, his wife of 56 years; his children, Tony Maggio and his wife Debbie of San Ramon, Ca. and Lisa DiGirolamo and her husband Phil of Felton, Ca. He is the brother of Louise Maggio of Fresno; and the beloved grandfather of Matt Maggio, Katie DiGirolamo and Emmy DiGirolamo. Visitation will be held at Jay Chapel in Madera on Sunday, June 13, 2010, from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John's Cathedral in Fresno on Monday, June 14, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Clovis Cemetery.
