Nicholas Grout Obituary

WESTMINSTER -- Nicholas Maher Grout, 21, of Westminster died on Sunday, July 2, 2006, at Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington, as the result of injuries sustained in a swimming accident.

Mr. Grout was born on Oct. 28, 1984, in Salem, Mass. He is the son of Jim and Colleen (Maher) Grout and the brother of Corey Grout. He was a 2003 graduate of Vermont Academy in Saxtons River and would have been a senior at Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, Pa.

Mr. Grout loved life and people. He was a young man of many talents. He was an accomplished musician, having played the guitar for many years. He could sing and dance but most importantly he had a knack for making people smile and laugh.

He also loved playing ice hockey -- on Harlow's Pond, with PVA and Vermont Academy and most recently for the Gettysburg College Bullets. He had a special love for Great Diamond Island, Maine, where he spent many of his childhood summers. Wherever he went, he loved his friends and they loved him.

He is survived by his parents, of Westminster, and his sister, of Portland, Maine. His aunts and uncles include Kelly Maher, Michael and Julie Maher and Timothy and Marsha Maher, all of Woburn, Mass., Dick and Susan Grout of Friday Harbor, Wash., and Steve Grout of Cape May, N.J. His cousins include Josh, Zach and Gabe Grout and Michael, Brendan, Kevin, Bridget and Patrick Maher.

He is predeceased by an uncle, Bob Grout, and a cousin, Tate Grout, both of Camden, Maine.

A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m., behind the Westminster Institute on Main Street in Westminster. A private family burial will follow the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Main Street Arts, P.O. Box 100, Saxtons River, VT 05154 and the Pleasant Valley Youth Hockey Association, P.O. Box 661, Walpole, NH 03608.u

Dear Mr. Mrs. Grout and family,
I am just sitting here reading the entries in the guest book looking at all the lives' that your son has touched. I only wish I would have known him. I don't know if you remember me, but I work in the Provost office at Gettysburg College and was just a new employee when I met you during your visit in the fall. I was so impressed with your positive outlook, but mainly in just the short amount of time you were here, everyone that I came in contact with said they could see how much you loved your son and how proud you were of him.
From everthing I've heard, he was one amazing young man.
Thinking of you.
Sincerely,
Lin Myers

Our family knows that the shock and awe we felt upon hearing does not compare at all with what you have experienced. Do know that our thoughts and prayers are with you. We are sad we could not be at the celebration of Nick's life in person - we feel we were there in spirit.

While I (Lee) have no clear memory of meeting Nick, I do have a strong sense of just how wonderful a son and brother he was through the many stories Jim told of family times, ice hockey games, and (most recently) Nick's entry in Gettysburg.
