Peter Cooper Meux

Peter Meux Obituary

Peter Cooper Meux passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, October 27, 2007. Peter was born in Fresno on October 23, 1946, to William and Virginia Meux and was the third of four children. Peter loved living in Fresno and the San Joaquin Valley. He valued being descended from the pioneer Fresno families of Dr. T.R. Meux and Dr. J.C. Cooper. He was a member of the Fresno County Bar Association and practiced law in Fresno for 25 years. Peter taught law classes for the Sierra Valley Business College for 25 years. Peter attended Jackson Elementary School, Longfellow Junior High School and Roosevelt High School. He received a BA and MBA from Fresno State College and while there, was a member of Theta Chi fraternity. He earned his law degree from Humphries Law School in Fresno. Although he was a devoted Bulldog fan, he also avidly followed Cal football and the San Francisco 49ers. Peter served his community by volunteering on many boards and committees including the board of the Mountain View Cemetery and the Fresno Public Education Fund. He attended services at St. James Cathedral with his wife, Elizabeth Rowland Meux, where they were married in 1971. He loved gardening, relaxing at his family cabin at Rock Haven, Shaver Lake; camping in the Sierra Nevadas with his father and brother; fishing with his daughter; sharing music; and enjoying his family and friends. Peter's family appreciates the attention and care given by Dr. Steven Chooljian and Dr. Robert D'Acquisto. Peter is survived by his wife Elizabeth; daughter, Katherine Elizabeth Meux Thaut and her husband Eric of Tacoma, Washington; his mother, Virginia Meux of Fresno; his brother, Richard Meux of Mill Valley; two sisters, Jennifer Meux White and Harriet Meux of Kensington; and numerous nieces and nephews. Peter will be remembered at a memorial service at St. James Cathedral, Cedar Avenue and Dakota on Thursday, November 1, 2007, at 3:00 p.m. Remembrances in lieu of flowers may be made to the Diabetic Youth Foundation, 15167 Clayton Rd, Suite F, Concord, Ca 94521; Museum of the Central Sierra, P.O. Box 617, Shaver Lake, Ca 93664; or a charity of the donor's choice. FAREWELL Fresno, Ca. (559)440-0484

We are praying for you at this time of year to hold fast to your special memories of Pete. I am one of Eric's aunts and remember his welcome to us at Katie and Eric's rehearsal dinner-so genuine, filled with joy and love. This past weekend Katie was here and showed me wonderful pictures of her Dad, his life, and the service. I could see how many people he had touched. Our sincere sympathy to all the family.

God's peace be upon you.

To Peter's family: Please except my deepest condolences. I have always felt a special connection to you because of the love that I have for your ancestor's lovely abode: the Meux Home. I have served the house for many years and have always enjoyed welcoming your family through it's doors and greatly appreciate all that you and Peter have done to support the museum.

Peter's mother and my mother were sorority sisters, and we lived about 3 blocks from Peter's home. I went to preschool with Peter and his sister Jennifer, then through Jackson Elementary, Longfellow Jr. H.S., and Roosevelt H.S. My closest relationship was with Jennifer, and I spent many overnights and Saturdays at their home. I always thought of Peter as a kind and gentle soul. When I returned to Fresno after 35 years away I bought a home in the foothills and started working for Foster Friends. I learned that Peter represented some of our foster children and contacted him at that time. Just the sound of his name takes me back to the 50's and the memory of his smile. My love to the family during this difficult time.

Pete was the kindest boss I've ever had, and when I have an ethic's question, I will always ask myself, what would Pete do. God has an attorney in Heaven.

Peter was a wonderful friend and we will miss him. He practiced law in my court for many years and he always brought wisdom and common sense when it was desperately needed. The effect of his presence in the court that deals with abused and neglected children could easily go unoticed by the community. But for those who work there, we know he made a great contribution to the children and families of Fresno County.
Thank you Peter and whereever you are, inspire others to fill the gap left by your absence.
Anthony Dennis Caeton, a judge who is proud to say we worked together.

I met Peter in 1987. I have been his gardener ever since. He was a very pleasant man. On hot days he would even offer me a soda. I am very appreciative of what he did for me. He will be missed. He will always be in my prayers. May God have him in his glory. My condolences to all his family.

I met Peter when we began attending Longfellow Junior High School. We spent three years there with many of our friends. Peter was one of the kindest individuals I have ever met. We also attended Roosevelt High School. Peter was always himself. He was a great listener, kind, and genuine. You could always depend on him as a friend. I am saddened by his death. My sincere condolences to his family.

Dear Meux Family,
My close friend, Jeff Price informed me of Peter's passing. Jeff has, countless times, over the years expressed how much he loved being around Pete..I met Pete several times when we were young, He carried with him a personality that 'Glowed'. Pete is in Heaven now..Know that though he is missed here...He is OK up there.

I am one of Eric's aunts and I, and my family, had the pleasure of meeting Pete and Libby at Eric & Katie's wedding. I was blessed by him as he went out of his way to welcome us to his home town and into his family. My favorite recollection of him is his handing the birds to Katie after her wedding and then together they watched them fly away. He will surely be missed.

May God's arms surround you,

Tom & Lorie Pelatt

Our family expresses our deep sadness and sympathy to Libby, Grandma Ginny, Katie and all Pete's family and friends. I had the pleasure of meeting Pete at Katie and Eric's wedding. What a kind, cheerful, optimistic, fun, and loving person he was! He and Libby made all of us in Eric's family feel like we were truly joining the Meux clan. I can only imagine what a loss this is to the Fresno community. Our sincere condolences,
Marilee Duncan (One of Eric's aunts)
