Peter Varvis Obituary

Beloved son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather and friend, Peter Varvis leaves a legacy of reserved dignity, hard work, and integrity. His parents, Louis and Maria Varvis, left Greece and settled in San Bernardino. After serving as an officer during World War II, he graduated as an Engineer from the University of California, Berkeley. He concluded 34 years with CalTrans, supervising the construction of Freeway 41 to Bullard Avenue. A colleague described him as a wonderful manager and brilliant engineer. He loved classical music, Dixieland jazz, the Sierras, and travel. He taught his children and grandchildren to stream fish. He was reader of mysteries, astronomy, history and economics, a collector throughout his life. and a restorer of furniture. To all he brought an eye for elegant simplicity. The family thanks the wonderful staff of the ICU of Saint Agnes Medical Center. He is survived by Mary Josephine, his wife of 54 years; his children, Susan and Richard Hunsbarger, Stephen and Teri Varvis, and Cathy and J.D. Varvis-Griffin; his was Papau to Kristin Hunsbarger, Brandon and Jennifer Hunsbarger, and Nathan Varvis; and great-granddaughter, Carlee Hunsbarger; siblings and their spouses, Angie and Earl Jeffries, Helen and Seward Richardson, Michael and Martha Varvis; and many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at University Presbyterian Church, 1776 E. Roberts Ave., Fresno, on Saturday, February 16, 2008, at 3:00 p.m. Remembrances may be made to St. Agnes, 1303 E.
