Rueben Horn Obituary

RUEBEN HORN

Rueben, age 81, passed away on Wednesday, July 9, 2003, with his loving family at his side. Rueben's health had deteriorated over the past year. He was diagnosed with stomach cancer in March and fought a courageous battle. His devotion to his wife Doris as her caregiver was always the most important thing to him. The strength of his love and devotion for his wife caused him to ignore his own well being. Rueben was born on January 27, 1927, to John and Marie Horn. His parents immigrated from Russia making him and his siblings first generation American citizens. He grew up in Fresno and attended Edison High School. Rueben served his country during WWII in the U.S. Navy. He entered the service in November 1942 and was discharged in October 1945. He was a Photographer's Mate First Class (T) USNR and spent two years in Adak, AK. Rueben and his uncle started Horn Photo Shop in 1937 in his parent's basement and Rueben owned and operated the business for 55 years before retiring in 1992. After Rueben's uncle passed away, he and his brother, John Horn Jr., became partners in the business and later Bradley Horn, Rueben's son, became a partner. Rueben was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Doris Jane Horn, on May 18, 2003; his parents, and his two sisters Ruth and Alice. He is survived by his loving daughter Janice Boyd and her husband Dan; his loving son, Bradley Horn and his wife Fran; his grandson, Michael Horn; his brother, John Horn and his wife Barbara; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Tom and Beverly Wulf, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Rueben and Doris were married on October 13, 1943, in The Little Church on the Green in Seattle, WA. Rueben spent his entire life working in his business. A baby of the depression era, he was always working and saving for his family and their needs, and dreams of a future easier and better than his childhood and young teen years. He loved to fish, garden, and tell jokes. He loved people and loved to make them laugh. Customers and friends could always count on a cup of coffee and candy or gum on the counter. "He has served his community with integrity, honesty, loyalty and pride." Rueben was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather who will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him, but the legacy he left with those he touched along the way will live on forever. Visitation will be held at Stephens & Bean Chapel on Sunday, July 13, 2003, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held at Stephens & Bean Chapel on Monday, July 14, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. with interment following at Belmont Memorial Park. Remembrances may be made in Rueben's name to People's Church, 7172 N Cedar, Fresno CA 93720, or Hinds Hospice, 1616 W Shaw #B-6, Fresno, CA 93711.
