DR. SIGMUND HUGO "Doc" SCHANDERL

Dr. Sigmund H. Schanderl "Doc" died on Tuesday, November 17, 2015, surrounded by his family. He was born on February 13, 1927, in Argentina, and relocated to Germany where he spent his early childhood and fortunately survived World War II. He returned to Argentina and ultimately to his beloved California. He received his Ph.D. from University of California, Davis, in 1962. He spent his 65 year career working in the wine and food industry, and teaching as a professor at Michigan State University in the Food Science department and California State University, Fresno, in the Enology department. He also worked with Valley Fig Growers, E&J Gallo Winery, Del Monte, Fleischmann's Vinegar, Wente Vineyards, and as a private consultant to the wine and food industry. He had a passion for knowledge, collecting rocks, rescuing greyhound dogs, and a profound love of nature. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugo and Maria Schanderl; sister, Sieglinde Mandoli; and his wife, Barbara H. Schanderl. He is survived by his daughters, Linda Marcinowski, Helen Winkler and Mara Young; grandchildren, Christina Ide, Michelle Martin, Diana and Lance Winkler, Alexandra and Christiana Young; great-grandchildren, Andy and Natalie Ide; and the great love of his life for 42 years, Betty Rothman. The family would like to thank all those who loved Sigmund and compassionately cared for him during his times of illness. A Memorial Ceremony is planned for his birthday in 2016.
