Fresno, California - Thomas "Toppy" Meehan of Fresno, age 91, passed away peacefully on December 30th, 2020 in his family home of 59 years.
Thomas was born the youngest of six children on February 27, 1929, in Portland, Maine to Joseph and Margaret Meehan. Tom was named "Mr. Personality" in high school where he was a standout athlete lettering in four sports. After college, he headed west on a cross country road trip and joined the Marines. He then landed in Port Hueneme, CA, became a police officer, hosted his own sports radio show, and met and fell in love with his wife of 68 years, Wanda.
Always drawn to the next big thing, Tom had a storied career as a sportswriter with The Fresno Bee and a sports agent representing professional athletes. Tom's contributions to sports were highlighted with his induction into the Fresno Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007. His most prized accomplishments were his four children and four grandchildren, all of whom possess his Irish gift of gab, quick wit, and love of The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. Often the one to remind his family to "keep the faith", Tom and Wanda's personal audience with Pope John Paul II was a momentous culmination of his life's accomplishments.
Tom is preceded in death by his wife Wanda, his parents, brother Joseph Jr, sisters Marnie Brown, Lucia Linton, and Joanne Coyne and son-in-law Martin Wagner.
He is survived by his sister Ann Mosely, his four children Kathleen Meehan and husband Allen Consolatti, Maureen Wagner, Colleen Meehan, Thomas Meehan Jr, and wife Cindy; his four grandchildren Ashley and husband Sean McBride, Ryan, Joseph, and Brandon Meehan, and many nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss him endlessly.
It is with profound reflection that we find ourselves, as Tom and Wanda's children and grandchildren, immersed in grief but also overwhelmed by gratitude for the unbreakable and everlasting gift of family they created.
A private family ceremony will be held to celebrate his incredible life.
