Bruce McAfee Obituary

Mr. Bruce McAfee "Coach Mac," 72, of the Wynnville community, passed away Friday, Oct. 19, 2018, at his residence.
Coach Mac was a graduate of Altoona High School where he excelled in all sports for the Choctaws. He was awarded All-County and All-State in basketball and football and in 1964 was awarded The Footskein Trophy for being the best player in Etowah County's Little Seven. He was also Mr. AHS for the Class of 1964.
Coach Mac then attended Auburn University on a football scholarship and went on to graduate with a degree in physical education. In August 1968 he was hired by Mr. J.D. Webb at SMHS as the head basketball coach and assistant football coach. In the 1989-1990 school year he served as the head coach for the football, basketball and baseball teams.
In 1994 he was selected as the principal for Susan Moore and continued in this position until he retired in 2000. In 2016 the SMHS gym was named in his honor by his former players and the community. He has also served three consecutive terms on the Blount County Board of Education with 50 years of total service to the Blount County schools.
In October 2018, Coach Mac was inducted into the Blount County Sports Hall of Fame.
He loved Susan Moore, his church family, community, family, friends and his yellow lab, Tess. He also loved to grow a large vegetable garden. He will be greatly missed by all of us.
Left to honor his memory is his wife of 49 years Sara (Gilliland) McAfee; son, Daniel McAfee of Auburn; daughter-in-law, Kari McAfee of Centreville; grandchildren, Kaylie M. (Tyler) Bynum of Blountsville and Bella Claire and Maleigha Rose McAfee of Centreville; brothers and sisters, Dale McClendon of Gallant, Philip (Tricia) McAfee of Wynnville, Alice Hamby of Wynnville, and Rex McAfee of Altoona; brothers and sisters-in-law, Stan and Jane Gilliland of Gallant, Jan and Sally Hathcock of Gallant, Thomas Green of Gallant and Bo Cagle of Gallant as well as many precious nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family, Jack, Cindy and Taylor Starkey.
Coach Mac is preceded in death by his parents, Alvis James and Juanita McAfee; son, James Michael McAfee; brothers-in-law, Ralph Hamby and Leon McClendon and sisters-in-law, Sadie Green and Sandra Cagle.
Brother Dan Boatman, Brother Rick Adams, Brother John Smallwood and Philip Robertson will conduct the funeral service at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, 2018, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Family Life Center, with Snead Funeral Home Directing.
The family will receive friends in the church sanctuary from 11 a.m. until time of the service Monday.
There will be no graveside service. The family and friends will meet after the service in the Susan Moore Elementary School lunchroom.
Pallbearers will be Brian Vaughn, Kirk Ingram, Jason Bullard, Brian Ingram, Andy Holland, Joey Bailey, Brad Holland and Patrick Jones (Saban).
Honorary pallbearers will be Ernie Payne, Larry (Pod) Patterson, Tom Boatman, B.P. Frachiseur, Randy Osborn, Donnie Williams, Greg Armstrong, Jim Williams, Jim Carr, Rodney Green, Blount County Board of Education and employees and all of his close friends that are too numerous to name.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Sharon and Karron Standridge, Oasis Hospice and nurse Kim Copeland, neighbors and friends.
Special guests: All current and former players, students, faculty and staff of Susan Moore.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations should be made to The Bruce McAfee Endowment Grant Fund. Donations can be mailed to BCEF, P.O. Box 603, Oneonta, AL 35121.
