W. Stafford Obituary

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Collier-Butler Chapel for W. Ray Stafford, Southside, who went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010. The Rev. Bill Harbison will officiate, with burial at Crestwood Cemetery. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation services directing.
Ray was born in Gadsden on Oct. 30, 1937, and lived here his entire life. He graduated from Gadsden High School and served in the U.S. Marines. In 1959, he married the love of his life, Melba Samples. He served as a firefighter for the city of Gadsden for 20 years, and retired as deputy chief. He cherished the friendships and memories of his days as a fireman. He then became a teacher in the Gadsden City Schools. He was a natural-born teacher and had a special way of communicating with the students. He later served on the Gadsden City Board of Education. He also taught at Westbrook Christian School and most recently at Gadsden State Community College as adult education instructor. After his health prevented him from teaching in the classroom, he became a tutor in his home.
Ray and Melba served in many churches during their life together. Ray served as choir director, and Melba always accompanied him on the piano. He was ordained as a deacon in 1978 at East Gadsden Baptist Church. In 1985, he accepted the call to preach and became the pastor of Walnut Park Baptist Church. He also pastored Reece City Baptist Church and filled the pulpit as interim at several local churches. He was currently a member of Riverbend Baptist Church.
Ray left an impression on everyone he met. He never met a stranger and truly loved getting to know people. He often recalled memories of his childhood on Noccalula Mountain and his and Melba's days on Blythe Street in East Gadsden. Ray always made sure to provide Christmas for needy families.
Ray was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Melba Samples Stafford; his parents, Jewell (Arthur) Brown; stepfather, John Garrard; father, David Ray Stafford; his parents-in-law, J.M. and Ruth Samples; sister, Judy Dobson; and brothers-in-law, Artie Dunn and Ronnie Bearden.
He is survived by his daughters and sons, Brian and Gina Harbison, Kristi Nichols, Lana and Ken Mummah, and Cheryl and Alan Moorer. The loves of his life were his grandchildren, Jessica Harbison and Caleb Thornton, Brittany and Beau Patton, Lauryn Mummah, Anna Stafford Nichols, Rebecca Moorer and his namesake, Carson Ray Moorer. He also leaves behind sisters, Jeanette (Ronnie) Poor, Linda Dunn and Sylvia Bearden; brother, John (Teresa) Garrard; sisters in-law, Lana (Johnny) Cannon and Judy (Butch) Filetti; brother-in-law, John (Bettye) Samples, Fulton Dobson; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Pallbearers will be all active and retired firefighters of the Gadsden Fire Department. Honorary pallbearers will be Randy Barksdale, Fred Christopher, Ralph Farrow, Dr. Don Hiltz, Don Mathis, Steve Means, Jerry Salvador, Norman Minton, Jerry Reaves, past and present staff of the Adult Education Department at GSCC, Rip Reagan, Ken Pharr and Tommie Cox.
A very special thank you to the staff of Lawley Drug and Medical, all of the wonderful people at Burtons of Southside, Dr. K. Clay Ellis and staff, Genny McCord, the ER staff at GRMC, Dr. Jason Ayres and Dr. M. Kaleem, the staff of the MICU and especially Rebecca Bostick, Scarlett Johnston and Kim McConnell.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to United Way of Baldwin County, Annie Armstrong Easter Offering of your local church or the Gadsden Fire Department "Toys from Santa."
Visitation will be at Collier Butler from 5 to 8 tonight. Online condolences may be made at www.collier-butler.com.

My deepest sympathy goes out to your whole family during this time of sorrow. I had the wonderful honor of meeting your father and getting to know him as a patient at our chiropractic office. He was truely a blessing to me and I thank God for allowing me the honor to share just a small part of his life and to be able to consider him a friend. We were able to share many conversations about our wonderful Lord and his love for his family. There are few people that you meet in life that you can truely feel blessed just by knowing, and he was that wonderful blessing to me. thank you for sharing your father with us and I pray God grace on you for now and the times ahead. He will truely be missed but I rejoice in knowing he is in the arms of our Lord.

Linda, Jeanette and other family members and friends, Ray was a dynamic figure in my life when we lived on Central Avenue. Bro Wade, Bro Storey, Uncle Louis, Minnie O'Steen, the choir, Ray...all were contributors in my formative years. I remember his black, curly hair and he was a good athlete and I remember the sand lot basketball and football games. He always showed great sportsman skills.
God bless Ray Stafford.

My deepest sympathy goes out to Jeanette, Linda, and Ray's family; Gina, Kristi, Lana & Cheryl. One can count friends on my hand and Ray was truly a friend even though seperate ways were taken after High School. I will never forget Ray, nor any of the South Gadsden friends I grew up with. One of the last times I spoke with Ray was on Mother's Day many years ago while he was at Walnut Park Baptist.
I don't know if it was Fate, or God that got me out of the house that Sunday to go see Ray. When I entered the services had already begun. You could here a pin drop, Ray paused for a moment and said,
speaking of Louis Wright his son, Robert just came in the door. He was speaking that day who had most influenced him in his life and he was talking about dad as his most influential person.
I enjoyed the times we had together, Ray, and Jerry did more for me than anyone could imagine. When I told my mom and dad that I would be out with Ray, and Jerry they knew I would be safe.

Never will I ever foget the times together with Ray, but all the friends I grew up with. I may not have much but the memories last forever.

As Dad said on his grave marker. "Love is Eternal"

To, Brian and Gina Harbison, Kristi Nichols, Lana and Ken Mummah, and Cheryl and Alan Moorer, and his grandchildren.

My sympathy to your family during this time Mr. Stafford was a true gentleman, and loved and nurtured others deep within his heart.

I never met this great man, nor did I even know he existed until my friend Ms. Genny McCord let me know of his passing. He touched all gently, and made this world a better place.

How do I know these things? These are the words that spoke to me as I read your beautiful summation of his life and life’s legacy.

It is an honor to have known him this way.

Dear Sweet Ray Stafford Family,
My heart is pouring out tears of joy as I celebrate with you in the life of your precious dad. I have many wonderful memories of your family that I will always cherish. One of my most treasured is the look I remember your dad giving me when he over heard me say, "just put it in the Lord's hands." Ray turned around from the front seat of the car and looked at me with eyes full of love and said,"can you say that again?" When I did all the Stafford girls laughed and laughed. It was pure joy being in that car at that moment.
The rejoicing in heaven was magnified when your dad entered in! I can't wait until we can all be together in glory forever and forever. There is a saying that friends in the Lord are friends forever, and for us that is truth.
Love and prayers!

Bro. Ray was a dear friend and a Godly man. I will never forget his kindness to my family, especially to my dad, Harold Cagle, who passed in 1998. Bro. Ray was not only my dad's pastor, but a very good friend. The two of them spent many hours together. Bro. Ray lives, and it is for sure that we will see him again walking on those streets of gold. God bless you and give you peace knowing he lives.
