Gaffney, South Carolina - Michael Allen Culbertson, 64, passed away surrounded by the love of his family. Born on August 12, 1961, in Blacksburg, Mike lived a life marked by strength, kindness, and unwavering devotion to those he loved.
Mike married the love of his life, Cheryl Culbertson, on February 18, 2006. Together they shared nearly twenty beautiful years filled with laughter, adventure, and a deep, abiding love. Their favorite memories were made traveling, camping, boating at Lake Greenwood, and simply enjoying life side by side. Mike had a strong, unwavering faith that carried him throughout his life. Mike also enjoyed playing golf and scuba diving.
A proud graduate of Blacksburg High School, Class of 1979, Mike was a standout football player for the Blacksburg Wildcats and a member of the 1976 State Championship team. His love for football and NASCAR remained with him throughout his life.
Mike began his career as a welder and, through hard work and dedication, spent the majority of his professional life at Sanders Brothers in Gaffney, South Carolina, where he served as an industrial estimator. He took great pride in his work and in the many friendships he built over the years.
More than anything, Mike's greatest joy was his family; especially his grandchildren. He never met a stranger and was always ready to greet you with a big "Cub hug." He was calm, gentle, steady, and deeply loved by everyone who knew him.
In addition to his beloved wife, Cheryl, Mike is survived by his children: Adam Culbertson (Tiffany) of Mount Pleasant; Chris Culbertson (Jenny) of Lino Lakes, MN; Gregory Kirby (Kaylee) of Cowpens; Carson Kimbrell (Damon) of Inman; and Taylor Culbertson of Greenville. He is also survived by his sister, Rita Culbertson Pate (Mark) of Blacksburg; his brothers, Steve Culbertson of Blacksburg, and Shannon Culbertson (Amy) of Travelers Rest; his cherished grandchildren, Brayton, Bowen, Baxley, Bennett, Savannah, Adeline, Lidi, Ainsley, Georgia and Renley; as well as many nieces, nephews, and in-laws whom he loved very much. He also leaves behind his lifelong friends, Ricky and Mickey Hambright who he loved like brothers.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lottie Martin Blanton; his father, Bill Culbertson; his brother, Billy Culbertson; his sister, Kim Culbertson; and his in-laws, Merle and Jan Reams.
Mike fought courageously throughout his battle with cancer, never giving up and never complaining. Cheryl was his devoted and constant caregiver, loving him faithfully through every step of his journey. She could not have cared for him without the unwavering support and help of Rita Culbertson and Kim Windham, whose love, strength, and presence meant more to the family than words can express.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the hospice program at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System, especially his nurse Christina and CNA Charlene, who cared for him with dignity, compassion, and integrity.
Mike's legacy of love, strength, and kindness will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
