Blacksburg - Floyd Scott Gordon Jr, 74, of 178 Cherokee Falls Road, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at his home.
Born in Gaffney, SC, he was the husband of Linda Hampton Gordon and the son of the late Floyd Sr. and Lillian Queen Gordon. Scott graduated Gaffney High School in 1967 and began driving an ambulance for his Uncle Bill at Gordon Mortuary shortly thereafter. He left Bill from 1968- 1971 to serve his country in the United States Army, spending 1969-1970 in Vietnam during the Tet Counteroffensive. Scott became a licensed funeral director and embalmer in 1972 after graduating from Gupton Jones College of Mortuary Science in Atlanta. Although he was working at the funeral home, he had continued to work as a Paramedic until shortly after joining the staff of Shuford Hatcher Funeral Home in the early 1980s. After working at Shuford-Hatcher for 19 years, God brought him an opportunity to return to Gordon Mortuary, and in 2007, he was able to achieve his dream of owning it. His son, Adam, joined the funeral home full-time after college, and the two of them worked to expand the Mortuary's footprint by purchasing Shuford-Hatcher (now Gordon Mortuary of Gaffney) and beginning construction of the Gordon Crematory and Pet Cremation Center.
Scott was an active member of Eastside Baptist Church for 50 years, serving as a deacon and doing any other job that the church needed him to do. He was also a member of the Buffalo Lodge #202 AFM and Rotary International. Scott was a former member of the Blacksburg Volunteer Fire Department and served as a South Carolina Constable.
In his 74 years of life, Scott did a lot of good things and served many roles, but his favorite role was serving as "Pop" to his grandchildren. He said on many occasions that he would have skipped having children and went straight to grandchildren if he could have.
In addition to his wife of 53 years, Scott is survived by his three children, Matt Gordon and wife, Katie, Amanda Gilfillan and husband, Jason, and Adam Gordon and wife, Ashley; a brother, Mike Gordon and wife, Dale; a sister, Cathy Gordon; his grandchildren, Anna Gilfillan McGee and husband, Andrew, Ryan Gilfillan, Maddie Jacobs, Jacob Gilfillan, Aedan Gordon, Elijah Owen, Paisleigh Gordon, Reagan Gordon, Ava Grace Gordon, Kaileb Gordon, and Zayden Gordon; two brothers-in-law, Bobby Hampton and Bobby Collins; and last, but certainly not least, his wonderful family of employees at Gordon Mortuary.
In addition to his parents, Scott was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy Gordon, and a sister-in-law, Wanda Collins.
The family will receive friends on Friday, May 26, 2023, from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm at Gordon Mortuary. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 27, 2023, at 1:00 pm at Eastside Baptist Church of Blacksburg with Rev. Eric Sellers officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. The employees of Gordon Mortuary will serve as pallbearers.
The family will be at the residence.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cherokee County Foster Parent Association, 131 Lakewinds Dr, Gaffney, SC 29341.
There have been so many people contributing in his final days. The staff of Spartanburg Regional Hospital and Spartanburg Restorative Care were so wonderful during his time at both places. Nikki and Gabby with Spartanburg Regional Hospice were so wonderful and kind to the entire family, and Courtney with Angelic Homecare went above and beyond to best serve our family. What all of you did for the family did not go unnoticed and the family extends a heartfelt thank you to all of you.
Most of all, thank you to the Gordon Mortuary staff for taking care of the funeral homes during this time. They made it possible to spend the last days with "Pop." Our full-time employees, Kendall Kirby and Tommy Carroll, as well as our other staff, were amazing at representing the funeral home and serving our families with dignity and pride.
