Gaffney, SC - Sybil Jean Harris Owenby, 83, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, September 22, 2025 at Upstate Community Hospice House.
Born in Marion, NC, she was the wife of the late Ronald Dean Owenby and the daughter of the late Dallas Lee "Jack" Harris and Anna Elmore Harris. She was a graduate of Marion High School, where she was a majorette and a member of the band. She was also a poll worker with The Cherokee County Voter Registration. Mrs. Owenby was retired from Excel Financial Services in Gaffney and a member of First Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class, was active in the Young at Heart and a served on the security team.
Surviving are two daughters, Rhonda Owenby Hatchette (Denny) of Spartanburg and Robin Owenby Dixon (Tom) of Boiling Springs; a sister, Mildred Harris Pettit of Marion, NC; three grandchildren, Hunter Hatchette of Spartanburg, Houston Dixon of Boiling Springs and Madison Dixon of Boiling Springs; a brother-in-law, Mike Owenby of Marion, NC; two nephews, Bill Pettit and Chris Owenby, both of Marion, NC; five nieces, Donna Harris of Durham, NC, Debbie Harris Terrell (Duane) of Marion, NC, Barbara Johnson Marlett (Don) of Tuttle, OK, Gina Johnson Grimmett (Randy) of Tombstone, AZ and Leslie Owenby McPeters of Wake Forest, NC; and numerous great-nieces and greatnephews. Mrs. Owenby was preceded in death by three brothers, J.D. Harris, James Harris and Tom Harris; a sister, Doris Harris Johnson; and a nephew, Mike Harris.
The family will receive friends from 1:00PM until 2:00PM on Sunday, September 28, 2025 at First Baptist Church. Funeral services will immediately follow at 2:00PM at the church with Reverend Tommy Comer, Reverend Kevin Hampton and Dr. Tommy Huddleston officiating. Interment will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens.
