William Kirby Obituary

Deacon William Thomas Kirby, Sr., age 67, was born on March 1, 1958, to the late James Kirby and Sadie Jefferies Kirby. On October 3, 2025, he peacefully went home to be with the Lord.

A man of strong faith, William lived a life rooted in service, devotion, and love. He was a graduate of Gaffney High school Class of 1976 and from SC State University class of 1980 with his BA in Education. He proudly served his country as a United States Navy Veteran, carrying the values of honor and discipline into every aspect of his life. His role as a deacon was one he cherished, using his voice, wisdom, and compassion to guide and uplift others. William was a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, INC. He was also an avid fan of the Minnesota Vikings.

William's life was defined by the love he held for his family. He leaves behind to cherish his memory: one son, William Kirby II; one daughter, Nakeshia Kirby; a brother Dr. George Kirby Sr.(Jannie) and four sisters, Anita Greene(Zack),Annie Kirby, Luticia Rodgers, and Paulette Kirby.

He was blessed with four grandchildren who brought joy and pride to his heart: Akeston Patton, Tamya Kirby, Tylan Kirby, and Brianna Chidester. He also leaves behind one dear aunt, Emma Houston, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, and friends.

Preceding him in death were his siblings: Allen Kirby, Mary Kirby, Hattie Kirby, and Edna Ross.

Deacon Kirby will be remembered as a devoted father, loving grandfather, caring brother, and faithful servant of God. His legacy of faith, service, and love for his family and community will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, October 12th at 2pm at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with Dr. George A Kirby Sr. Officiating.

Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

We met Kirby over 40 years ago at SCSU and became friends. He was always a gentleman around us. We had several conversations in September 2025. It truly saddened us to get this news. He will be missed but never forgotten. Our hearts and prayers are with the family.
