Coimbatore Iswaran Obituary

ISWARAN, COIMBATORE VENKATESWARAN

Dr. Coimbatore Venkateswaran Iswaran went to be with our Lord on July 26, 2008.

He came to the U.S. from Madras, India in 1969 to take his master's degree from Clemson University in South Carolina. Upon his completion of his Masters, he was accepted into the Department of Engineering at the University of Florida where he wrote one of the largest PhD's in the department's archive. He was an expert material science engineer, writing and publishing in numerous scientific journals on atom jump theory and titanium stress.

"Ish" as he was affectionately known throughout, touched many lives. He was a brilliant scholar, a master bridge player, a mathematician and a political provocateur. He wrote many controversial editorials to several newspapers taking on a firebrand cause for the liberal platform and the common man.

He was a pragmatist possessed by superb logical skills. He taught physics and mathematics at SFCC for several years igniting the minds of youth. He was known by everyone as one whom had a vast repertoire of jokes and personal anecdotes that touched us all with such joy and laughter.

He loved to be among nature planting hot peppers and tending to gardening. He was a kind and gentle man who saw to the little needs and tender details of those whom he cared about.

He leaves behind a global family: Mr. & Mrs. C.I. Sivasubramanian, his cousin Meenkshi Sanyal, her husband Atish in Burke, Virginia and their children Aprotim, Anupam and Mohima; in India his cousins Hema, Anandhi and Kannan and an extended family.

He is survived by many colleagues and friends. He had a long-life Godly friend and sister in Christ, Annie Wood Fuller, who was with him at the end.

My Ish,
It has been 8 monhs now and my grief has placed itself neatly in my heart-- days into nights I am missing you without end--- I know you rest with the Lord and watch over me--- I miss you all the way to God, my little brown boy.
I love you still,
your,Annie "pi" pie--- -

MY sweet Ishie it has been 6 months now since you gave up your spirit here in my woodland home-- and I am still lost without you--- you have left me treasures that I am still finding, hundreds of notes from you to me, cards, letters, emails, clothes, hats, videos, pictures that are with me each day of my grief and my lost life-- these are the sad days for me-- I cant fathom that I am living without seeing you, hearing you call me Annie pie, having you watch me sing in chruch come with me places that we used to go all the time, all these things now I do alone. You were all I had on this wretched earth--- I can hardly keep up my face to the light--- this house speaks your name each day and heaves sadness with me as I walk across the yard that we made together. Sasha still looks for you when I call your name, I still let her smell your shirts and she senses the black depressions that are haunting me. When will I end so that I can be with you and as you once wrote to me, "dance among the daffodils"
I am on the Mountain Grief, still.

It has been nearly 2 months since I lost my dearest Ishie as he let me call him. I can no longer live in my home for it is so painful for me to walk by the room where he took his last breath, to look out and see all the wonderful times and things we did together as best friends on my property. It was my home in deed name but it was his in spirit and from my heart, for it is written in the Bible, a book that Ish and I both beleived in and worshiped from that when a man needs a coat, give him yours, if a man need shoes buy him a pair, and when I first met Ish he was homeless so I gave him my home. I taught him about agape love and the Christian walk. He came to Christ in my home one evening 8 months ago. And too,
it was here that he was safe and loved and it was here that he came to when he needed to be loved and listened to without any condementaion or judgement.
Ish was my last foot warrior in my life, and because I have no family he was my last family. I lost my first brother in 2003. They both were good friends and scientists in common and now they are together in heaven.
Ish gave to me all that I needed to be whole and safe and I have nothing left to hold onto any longer but memories that are too painful to recall in my grief.
I am setting up a scholarship fund at the Engineering department in his name.
I miss you my Indian prince-- my Ishie. And when God takes me I hope it is your hand that talkes me up to Jesus, our Lord.
Thank you Ishie for all that you did and fought for, for me. I am without a part of myself that no one can ever give to me any longer. I loved you "all the way to God,"
Love, your Annie-pie, (your "dark Arab girl.")

Sekar’s Sashtiabdapurthi (60TH birthday)

Sekar completed 60 years on 17th July 2008 (according to Indian calendar, and on 20th July 2008, according to the English calendar) and he celebrated the occasion (what we call ‘Sashtiabdapurthi’, meaning literally completion of 60 years).

Sixty years in a man’s life is an important landmark. It is actually a period when further extension of life is sought for through rituals and prayers.

We (Amma and I), who were on a visit to Washington, and Meena accordingly called Sekar, who was in Gainesville, Florida, to come over to Washington to celebrate the occasion with the family. He was not inclined to come as he wanted to preserve leave for a visit to Delhi in November to attend Arti’s marriage. So we decided to leave Washington for home in India on the 17th July immediately after our Insurance expired.

But Arti wouldn’t have it that way. She pleaded with us to extend our stay and press Sekar to come over to Washington. She said that this was the least we could do to Sekar who is living all by himself in Gainesville. We asked Sekar to come over just for a day or two and return immediately and he finally agreed. And we extended our stay till end July.

Sekar arrived from Gainesville on the 16th evening. On the 17th morning, we – Amma, Sekar, Meena and I -went to Sri Siva-Vishnu temple in the morning. Meena had taken the day off from work. (Atish had gone away to Kolkata to be with his ailing father who was sick at that time and Anupam and Mohima had to go to work).

Sri Siva Vishnu Temple, the premier Hindu temple in the Washington DC Metropolitan area, is located in Lanham, Maryland, about 12 15miles from Washington DC and 30-35 miles from our home. After dropping Mohima at the Naval Research Lab where she is doing internship, we headed to the temple. We happened to be there early just when the temple opened for the public. We performed ‘Archanai’ and ‘Abishekam’in his name and witnessed the Abishekam of all ‘Moola Vigrahas’ – Siva, Venkateswara and Karthikeya and ‘Vennai Kappu’ of Anjaneya. All of us prayed to God to give long and healthy life to Sekar and sang paeans and ‘shlokas’ in praise of the Lords. We had the satisfying experience of spending about three hours in the Kovil premises during all the Pujas. This was made possible as the Siva Vishnu temple has several deities consecrated in its premises under one roof.

In the evening the children joined and we all went to ‘Angeethi’ an Indian restaurant at Herndon, about 20 miles away from home, for dinner.

We ended the day by viewing “Bhool Bulaiyaa” a Hindi movie on the home TV. The next day too Sekar and I watched the same movie in the bigger TV at the basement and got some of the doubts cleared.

Sekar has been living all by himself in Florida and has very few occasions to be with members of the family. The ‘Sashtiabdapurthi’ gave him an occasion to visit the family in Washington and we, as his closest relatives, were fortunate to be present there then.

Epilogue

Alas! Sekar left all of us almost immediately after returning to Gainesville. He suffered a stroke and breathed his last at 7.00 AM on Saturday the 26th July 2008.

Sekar remained hale and hearty till the last moment and did not suffer but passed away in peace. He spent almost a week with the family when he thoroughly enjoyed himself. We further learnt that he was not only not lonely in Gainesville but had lots of friends and admirers from all sections of the Gainesville Society who gave him good and constant company and he did enjoy life to the full as the eulogies paid to him at the funeral service show.

Ichu and I were classmates in Madrasi School, Lodi Road that my Dad Late Mr. M.K.Sivasubramanian built way back in 1950's. We were also in the same class where we learnt Sanskrit that he was always good at. We were in IIT together. I was in the Elec. Eng section. I last met him in Madras when we were together for 40th year get together. I am in Vancouver, B.C. , Canada.
Please accept our deepest condolences to all in the family. may his soul rest in peace.

I was shocked to hear about Eachu after three decades. It was a pleasure meeting Eachu in Orlando. The inimitable Eachu hadn’t changed a bit ..
We recalled Saraswathy hostel days..Eachu occasionally used to drop into my room and invariably swipe a book from my shelf with an audacious yell ' It is your responsibility to claim it back, not mine to return!!'..
Compilation of Eachu posts (specially the Rambo_Eachu dialogs) could be a fitting "Eachu memoirs”.

It was shocking news, though I have not seen him since 1969. May his soul rest in peace. Don't you feel that all of us require a less stressful life after sixty, especially having slogged all through life? Of course the ultimate is in the hands of the almighty.

Ishwaran was one of the batch mates who I remember very well till date and his face 44 years back is still fresh in my memory.
It seems that we should consider life after 60 as a bonus to us from god and spend it towards improvement of society. We being IITians can definitely contribute to society in whatever way we can and thus give back at least part of what we have benefited from society.
May his should rest in peace.

It is indeed a sad day that Ichu is no longer in our midst. We will all miss him and being a part of ‘D” section has been with him from the beginning of 1964.
My condolences to his family and may God give them courage to bear this sudden loss.
May his soul rest in peace.

I learnt about the sudden demise of Eachu on Sunday 27th July.
As a classmate of Eachhu, I have known him very well in Chennai. I did speak to him in Florida last year.
We have always had respect for his sharp intellect and his ability to think fresh. His strength was in his being able to laugh at himself. In our yahoo groups he used to be a regular contributor and would come up with very novel thoughts.
We have lost in his demise a good class mate and friend.
Kindly accept our heartfelt condolences on this bereavement in your family. We join you in your grief and we are in a loss of words to express at this untimely demise.
We will always remember him.
May his soul rest in peace.

In 1982, when I first met Ish at a Department social (even before I enrolled at UF),
he told me a story, that I still remember. (This was 26 years ago -- can that be?).

Ish told me about a homesick Indian student, who really just HAD to get home.

ISH:

" He went to the airport, you know, and he told the ticket agent, 'I just MUST have
a ticket for Delhi.'

" The agent said, 'That's 867 dollars and 50 cents'.

" The poor student emptied his pockets, but he had only 876 dollars and 25 cents.

" Crushed, the student went out of the terminal to the curb, sobbing.

" Then, up came a nice gentleman from Waldo. He asked the Indian student
what was the matter.

" The student replied, ' I want to go back to India, but I need 25 cents !'

" ' No problem,' said the gentleman from Waldo, pulling a dollar from his wallet.
' Here you go --- and take three of your buddies with ya' ! ' "

I hope when "God sorts 'em out', he sorts me to the same place that he sorts Ish....

All of us in our batch were really shocked to hear of Ichu’s sudden death. We remember him very well and very fondly because of his many outstanding qualities. Yes, I was personally very close to him because we used to stay on the same street (3rd Trust Cross Street, Mandavelipakkam). Ichu’s uncle was residing on the first floor of one of the corner houses of 3rd Norton Lane (which is a continuation of 3rd Trust Cross Street). Ichu used to come home on many of the weekends- when he used to visit his uncle’s house. Many times we used to cycle together to or from IIT (that was the popular mode of transport during those days to IIT).

I was personally very close to him and I am still very shocked.

could not meet. a missed opportunity, never to return ....

now my only memory is that of a zany hostel-mate who horse-laughed,
clicked his false front tooth and peered thru the single glass of his
spectacles.

i will miss his erudite, controversial posts.

It is sad to learn that Eachu is no more.Though I never had opportunity to meet him after we all left IITM ,I have always found it fascinating to read through his long e-mails ,a few of them containing Sanskrit verses. It is not given to all to know so much of Sanskrit ,a Divine and ancient language.Eachu was special.

I am saddened to know that Ichu has passed away. I`ve known him for a very long time, liked him for him for what he was and admired him for expressing his point of view on many issues, his PJs, his sanskrit, his iyerness. We have been in touch, off and on. I will miss him. The last time I saw him was during the Orlando reunion.

Ish's passing away is very sad and shocking. Eachu had a brilliant mind and at the same time a big heart, and his soul was troubled by many things that he saw and could not change. A true savant, with an enormous breadth and depth of knowledge in many subjects, particularly religion and God. Curiosity was his middle name and he was game for a fight for what he thought was right. All in all a Maha Atma.
He lives on in all the good things that he did which touched us. He was a master of PEEJAYs.

THis is really a sad news. Eachu had strong viewpoints and he expressed them also strongly.

Ichu is how I remembered him from IITM. He was a year ahead of me but during his 4th and 5th years we studied in my dorm room at Ganga Hostel together, ate together and had a lot of fun together. Ichu, or Ish as he was known in the US, was the primary reason I went to Clemson to get my Master's and he and I were roomies for two years. What a wonderful time we had!! We quarelled, we celebrated, had fun, and at the end had a great time.
I've been trying to locate you Ish for the last thirty-five years and while I was not able to do so I know Sri Bhagwan is taking care of you now. I will always cherish our times together.
Peace!

I am very sorry to hear about the sad news that Sekar is no longer with us -- the finality of it is shocking, that too within a week when he was with his family in Washington DC to celebrate his "Shasti Abdhaapoorthi". I know it must be such a shock to all of you. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

What I remember about Sekhar is that Meena was proud of her brother who challenged her intellectually when she was in the High School. I remember this very vividly. He used to mail Scientific American from the US so that Meena could think about her Science Talent project, and, possibly even suggested the project that she should work on. He was a free spirited guy, and, remained so till the end.

Sekar was dear to me too, even though I have seen him only a few times, the memories of those occasions are still fresh and bright in my mind. Sekar had a very colourful and much more interesting life than many of us have the fortune or gumption to enjoy.
I envy Sekar's Gainseville cult of fans who knew and interacted with him a lot more. You should all feel proud and happy to have him as a part of the family.

He had a meritorious academic career; He had interest and was well informed and knowledgeable in all walks of life. He had a sharp Memory of all events from childhood. With his humourous and jovial demeanour, his company always kept everybody among his relatives and friends in high spirits and in a cheerful mood.

August 8, 2008

Sashi Rao (IITM):
Its tragic that such a brilliant mind has been snatched away from us all so soon. Needless to say, he was very active in our email yahoo group and revealed his vast knowledge and very fertile brain. His deep knowledge on very many subjects and issues was really awesome and so was his acerbic wit. From a personal angle, he helped draft a unique wedding invitation card for my daughter's wedding in 2004 in Sanskrit about where north meets south and so shall the Indian rivers flow together. And that still is a great hit whenever we talk wedding cards.

Ramji Ramaseshan

August 8, 2008

Ramji Ramaseshan
When I heard the shocking news of the passing away of Sekar, one of my closest childhood friends, many of those years that we spent together at Lodi Colony in Delhi came back to me in vivid detail. Three years elder to me in school, Sekar (fondly called ‘Ichu’ by others at school) was just the kind of neighborhood fellow schoolmate that you looked up to and wanted to emulate: sharp, skilful and intelligent, brilliant in academics but not the studious poring-over-books-forever kind, someone with amazing memory, witty and a real fun fellow. He had an amazing ability at repartee. For instance, once we were in such a tearing hurry that we boarded the suburban train without buying tickets and soon were in mess having been confronted by the tickets inspector on the train. Imagining us to be vagabonds, the inspector asked “Tum log kya karte ho? (What work do you guys do?)” Pat came Sekar’s reply “Hum kabhi kabhi galti karte hain (We sometimes commit mistakes)”. The inspector went into splits and let us go without any penalty.

Always willing to help, Sekar was always there; be it my school science projects or some intricate problem in math. But the best thing about him was his willingness to play games at any time of the day. I can never forget all those endless games of cricket (which he loved) between just the two of us in the mid-day heat during summer holidays, spinning tops and flying kites, or indoor games like carrom, monopoly, checkers, or scrabble in which his mother and grandmother too joined in.

After he moved to an engineering college in Chennai down South and then to the US, we could meet only during the rare visits that he made to India. But Sekar was the same. He never lost his wit and humour nor his analytical and argumentative skills, which, in fact, had become sharper than ever before. He would accurately recall some corny lines from a Sanskrit skit that I had done in school and make fun of me.

Thanks to the internet in later years the interaction grew to bring us closer again. And those mails ranged from Sekar’s incisive comments on serious political, social and scientific issues both in the US and in India as well as trivia but with the special Sekar’s twist to them. He was particularly concerned about governance under Bush’s. Though he went to the US where cricket is not played, his interest in the game never waned and he would promptly send mails commenting on the state of play whenever some important matches took place. Using his mathematical skill, he had even devised an interesting alternative to the currently adopted Duckworth-Lewis scheme of scoring in matches that are not completed due to bad weather.

August 8, 2008

Raghunandan (IITM):
Eachu was a person who would stand out in any crowd. What set him apart from many of us was his enthusiasm and passion in everything that he stood for and believed in. Never one to accept anything at face value, he would stand his ground and debate his point forcefully even at the risk of being labeled 'quarrelsome'; at the same time he was magnanimous enough to withdraw and step back when convinced of the opposite point of view. In the many debates that we have had in the e-group Eachu would invariably advance a contrarian but very logical argument that would leave us thinking for days together.
Never one to carry any grudge Eachu could be fighting with you at one moment and smiling and hugging you the very next instant - he had a golden heart.
I interacted with Eachu only in our first year, but the image of him as a 16 year old has stayed on over the 40 odd years that have gone by.

He was a very talented person, a great research scholar and an embodiment of many virtuous qualities. His sudden passing away has created a great void in our family which is very difficult to fill.

Ravi Narayanaswamy (Cousin):
He was a brilliant person with sharp insights. His loss is irreparable.

A. Subramanian (IITM):
We have always had respect for his sharp intellect and his ability to think fresh. His strength was in his being able to laugh at himself. In our yahoo groups he used to be a regular contributor and would come up with very novel thoughts.
We have lost in his demise a good class mate and friend.

Ish was one of the most intelligent and comical men we know. Whether the topic was history, science, foreign cultures, or politics; he was always well versed. We spent many hours discussing a large range of events and ideas, and he always found a way to put forth his own brand of humor. His humor was legendary. Also, it isn’t often that we find someone who forms his on thoughts and opinions, and is willing to express them so freely in a way that makes his ideas approachable to those who are less well rounded. He taught us that the most important part of life was not only learning but applying that knowledge to everyday life in a way that may help others. His family must be so proud of him. His wisdom and wit will never be forgotten. His friends will remember him with respect and admiration and he will be deeply missed by all. I extend my condolences to his family and everyone whose lives he touched. I hope that the memories we all cherish will help lessen the burden of your sorrow, and that you may draw some small comfort knowing that others share in your loss. Ish was a remarkable man, and he made a difference in the lives of many people.

Not in the physical frame of man and woman but emotionaly and spiritual. He was my foot soldier helping me through my tattered life bringing me to a woman that stands on her own. We first met through the university when I was post grad and he was getting his Phd.
We lived together for 10 years as soul mates in God's eyes. I am so grateful for what I had with him and what we were for one another. He was my rock on this earth. I am trusting God in this. My Mountain is Grief.

People walk in and out of our lives and some just leave larger footprints.
Everyone's already mentioned your great jokes and stories, but I still loved the Teabag story the best.
You challenged people to think and I believe that is one of your greatest contributions to this world.
I am so glad you had Annie to be with you, and my heart and prayers goes out to Meena and Atish and the rest of your family. God Bless and goodbye Ish. I hope you're upstairs playing bridge with Karl Kepplar right now.

I did not know Ish personally. But my daughter who worked with him would often send some of his articles to me by way of email and he and I would have a fascinating correspondence. I know he was a great man, and a fun communicator and could tell from his writings that he was a caring and outgoing person.

My daughter said there never a time that he failed to say hello or go out of his way to make sure she had a good day. This was a man who will be missed by so very many people.

Ish, I did not know you but yet we had this bond. My prayers are with your family and many, many, friends. I am grateful for the exchanges that we had by way of my daughter.

I will miss this guy. I have 2 regrets: the first is that he is no longer here with us in the physical realm. Second, I have much grief that I did not have more time with him. Goes to show that we should give the accollades and flowers to people while we can. ISH, you, your jokes and great attitude will be missed. Your Jamaican buddies will never forget you. Rest In Peace knowing that you made a dent in this world. Your legacy lives on! I pray that God will give his family the strength to cope and heal.

I was shocked to read about Ish's passing this morning in the newspaper. My first thought was "typical Ish, playing some kind of cosmic joke once again on his friends and the Gainesville Sun to boot". I only wish it were so. I'll miss your biting wit and no-holds-barred conversations. Rest in peace, bro'. You are gone from us way too soon.

OMG Ish. I am without words after twenty years of knowing you.

There was not nearly enough time with you. You were an amazing man and I am happy to say friend.

I am so thankful that I got to spend more time with you over the past two years. It was a gift.

What will I do without your jokes, your smile, and your overwhelming supply of knowledge.

My thoughts and prayers are with all that loved him. His friends and family.

You will be greatly missed.

We lost a good man today. Ish was a man who cared for others and always tried to keep people smiling. At the same time he never sacrificed his beliefs and stayed true to himself. I will miss you Ish, you had a positive effect on my life. Rest in peace my friend.
