Frank Wickes Obituary

WICKES,
FRANK B. (BOVEE)
Frank B. (Bovee) Wickes, 82, passed away on Monday, April 27, 2020 at Seagrass Village of Fleming Island, a senior living facility near Jacksonville, Florida.
Born on August 8, 1937 in Ticonderoga, New York, he was preceded in death by his parents Rupert Dana and Francis Newton (Johnston), his brother Bradley Kellogg, and his youngest son, Steven John. He is survived by his sons Frank Dana and Thomas Bradley, his grandchildren Kody, Adam, Megan, and Keith, and his brothers George Rupert and Dana Scott.
Frank spent more than 50 years of his life in music education, serving as director of bands at Alexis I. duPont High School (1959-66, Wilmington, DE), Fort Hunt High School (1967-73, Alexandria, VA), the University of Florida (1973-80, Gainesville), and Louisiana State University (1980-2010, Baton Rouge). He retired from Louisiana State University as an Alumni Professor in May 2010 after 30 years of service.
A graduate of Ocean City High School (1955, Ocean City, NJ), Frank attended the University of Delaware, earning a bachelor's degree in music education (1959), while serving as a star athlete and team captain in basketball. Many of his Delaware Fightin' Blue Hen basketball records remain unbroken today. A clarinetist, Frank earned a Master of Music degree in woodwind performance from the University of Michigan (1967), studying with legendary teachers William D. Revelli and Larry Teal. He also served as a member of the Delaware National Guard (1960-66).
Frank's illustrious teaching career touched many people, and countless students and colleagues speak innumerable testimonials of his musicianship, leadership, tenacity, character, and humor. His Fort Hunt High School band program was recognized as one of the most prominent high school music programs of the twentieth-century by the John Philip Sousa Foundation, and his concert ensembles at the University of Florida and Louisiana State University (LSU) performed at regional and national music conventions to widespread acclaim. Frank's love for sports, especially LSU football, was seen through his 30 years with the LSU Tiger Marching Band. During his tenure as director of bands, the LSU Tiger Band received the Sudler Trophy (2002), the 'Heisman Trophy of college marching bands,' and the LSU Tiger Band was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame (2009).
Frank was a past president of the American Bandmasters Association (1997-98), the National Band Association (1988-90), and the Southern Division of the College Band Directors National Association (1986-88). He was inducted into the National Band Association Academy of Wind and Percussion Arts (2008), in addition to the National Band Association Hall of Fame of Distinguished Conductors (installed 2010). Frank was also inducted into the Louisiana Music Educators Association Hall of Fame (2009) and the University of Florida Bands Hall of Fame (2010). LSU bestowed him an honorary Doctor of Arts degree in 2019.
Frank's service to the music profession is a matter of record and his extraordinary legacy lives on with his students, many of whom hold prominent leadership positions in music across the country and beyond. A celebration of his life is being planned for sometime this fall in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Frank Wickes was the finest teacher I have ever known, in any subject, at any level, at any institution. I was fortunate to have him as my Band Director, both at the University of Florida and at Louisiana State University. At Florida he was also my saxophone teacher. At LSU he was my major professor for my masters degree in conducting.
He always had extremely high musical standards and knew exactly what I needed to become better at my craft. I will remain thankful, always, that our paths crossed.

Drove me and my drums to school many mornings only way I could get them there for rehearsal. Above and beyond rare hero. A I DuPont High School 1965-1969

Finest person in the world. At A I DuPont high school came at 7:30 am and picked me and my drum set up whenever necessary because I had no way to get them to school.

He was larger than life. And he consumed my life for three years.

I had always had a sweet spot for him. How could I not?

For three years I had sat at his feet for two hours a day, directly under him with my head tilted back watching his every move as his over six-foot-tall frame loomed over me from where he stood on the podium inches away from my feet - making him even taller. Plus the outdoor practices in the parking lot and the dress rehearsals on the football field! And even more hours practicing at home!

He was demanding, yet respectful, always expecting our best. And he got it.

His love for music encouraged our passion and caused it to take root in our hearts, too.

In 1959, Frank had recently graduated from college and was my music and band teacher. He started me on clarinet when I was in 3rd Grade at Greenville Elementary School and later was my band teacher for 3 years at Alexis I. duPont High School, both in Wilmington, Delaware. Frank made sure we always had a well rehearsed and prepared Concerts, Ensembles, Marching Band Halftime Shows, Drum Core, Precision Drills, Pep Bands, Jazz Band, Orchestra, he did it all! The tuba player and I were seniors in High School when we drove to Fort Hunt High School in Virginia to visit Frank. The Fort Hunt High School Band had won the International Band Competitions in Vienna for several years. Everyone would agree that Frank had always been a marvelous conductor. His accomplishments with the LSU Wind Ensembles and Tiger Band and his conducting clinics are outstanding. As a result of Frank's mentoring, I pursued a Music Career and attended Berklee School of Music (later Berklee College of Music when they got accredited). While pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Composition (Performing on Clarinet/Bass Clarinet, Flute, Saxophone, and Piano), I had the opportunity to study with outstanding professors, but Frank was always on my mind especially during any band work. Frank had a great sense of humor, he was supportive, and was deeply dedicated to Music Education. I am older now, working a couple more years for the Special Education Department in a public school, and teaching After School Woodwind Lessons. Frank will be missed and I was blessed to have Frank as a teacher and mentor.

I am so sorry for your families loss. I was lucky to have spent five years with Dr. Wickes at LSU. I learned so much from him as our band director. Such great memories I have of him and band.

An awesome director that made my transition from high school to college band a smooth and exciting one by using humor and tenacity mixed with love for his students. I will always be grateful for his service to the students and LSU.

I was acquainted with Professor Wickes when the LSU Band would perform at Bengal Belles Luncheons. He was the best Band Director any University Band would love to have as their leader. Professor Wickes was instrumental in getting the LSU Golden Band From Tigerland an invitation to march in the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Dublin, Ireland, in the band earning the Sudler Award and being recognized as one of the Best College National Marching Bands in the Country. God Bless You Mr. Wicks, our prayers are with your family and many friends.

As a former member of the Golden Band from Tigerland from 1981-84, I wish to convey my heartfelt condolences to his family and all who knew him. I am saddened he has left us, but thankful to have been a member under his leadership. God bless you, sir. Thank you for one of the greatest experiences of my life.
