JAMES CARTER Obituary

CARTER, JAMES RICHARD
Gainesville - James Richard Carter was born in Greensburg, KY on August 5, 1942 and also came to call Gainesville, FL his home. Jimmy owned Carter Striping Service, during which his work included asphalt and grandstand services at NHRA tracks throughout the county. His work was known far and wide and earned him the title 'Asphalt Doctor', as well as several community service awards for donating his time and services. He was a veteran of the Army Reserve and a member of the American Legion and Elks Club. Jimmy was also appointed a Special Registered Deputy Sheriff for Alachua County, commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel, and served on the board of directors of the Fightin' Gators Touchdown Club. While Jimmy will be widely remembered for his work and as a diehard Florida Gator and NASCAR fan, it was his kind and generous spirit that is his lasting legacy.
Jimmy was an inspiration to his family in his battle with cancer, beating all odds by surviving far longer than could have been hoped, maintaining a positive attitude and an undying work ethic until the end. He succumbed to the disease on October 30, 2014. He is preceded in death by his parents Alene and Scotty Carter and his sister Mae Carter Burden (W.D.). He is survived by his children Jeff Carter (Lori) of Westminster, CO, Tonya Carter Applegate of Berea, KY and Stacy and Lacy Boyles of Gainesville, FL as well as 'the love of his life' Debbie Boyles. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law Donna and Barney Shuffett, several nieces and nephews, and five grandchildren: Lauren and Jacob Applegate, and Britany, Shelby, and Georgi Carter.
The family will be gathering in Cedar Key on Saturday, November 29th for a small celebration in honor of Jimmy's life and would like to welcome friends to join them. Please contact Stacy at [email protected] for details.
