Lorna Craven Obituary

CRAVEN,

LORNA ANDREAE, 85

Gainesville - Lorna Andreae Craven passed away in Gainesville, Florida, early morning April 27, 2013. She was 85.

Born in Anniston, Alabama on September 19, 1927, to Swiss parents Louise Anna Rast and Fritz V. Andreae. She graduated from Central High School in Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1944, attended the Art Academy of Cincinnati under a scholarship, and graduated from the University of Chattanooga (now UTC) with honors in 1949. That same year she married the love of her life, Roy Curtis Craven. The couple lived and studied in New York City at the Art Students League under the painter, Yasuo Kuniyoshi. They moved to Gainesville in 1955, where Roy became Professor of Art at the University of Florida and later, Director of the University Gallery. Lorna was an accomplished painter, artist, cook, seamstress, wife and a great mentor to her 2 children and three granddaughters. She taught painting, exhibited locally and her paintings hang in the homes of numerous friends and family. She accompanied Roy on professional trips to India, Central & South America, Asia and Europe.

Predeceasing her were her parents and her beloved Roy and a sister, Yvonne. Surviving are her children Curtis A. Craven of Austin, Texas; Hillary Y. Craven of Gainesville, Florida; three granddaughters: Carla C. Ward, Hannah DeWitt, and Maggie DeWitt, two great-grandchildren; brother Pierre Andreae of Chattanooga; sister Claire A. Hale of Signal Mountain; brother-in-law and accomplished musician, Jay Craven of Murray Hills.

A private gathering will take place in June. Offerings of condolence may be made to the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art, Asian Wing, SW 34th Street and Hull Road, Gainesville, Florida 32611, in her memory.
