He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Nancy Hulcher Gilmer, Buford, Ga.; children, Tanya Gilmer Caldwell and Jason Caldwell, Norcross, Ga., James Edward Gilmer Jr., St Amant, La., Alan Carlton Gilmer, Lilburn, Ga., Wendi Lorraine Damren, Cleveland, Ga., Jonathan Charles and Amanda Damren, Camp Lejeune, N.C. and Rebecca Elizabeth Damren, Buford, Ga.; six grandchildren, Suzanne Elizabeth Anderson, Amber Marie Couse, Rebecca Ann Golden, Allie Louise Carroll, Landon Evans and Cadence Evans; sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty and Bob Kimball, Buford, Ga., Donna and Larry Puckett, Buford, Ga., and Sue Ellen Durham, Buford, Ga.; brother and sister-in-law, David and Linda Gilmer, Lakeland, Fla.
Mr. Gilmer was born August 7, 1938, in New Holland, Ga. He was a 1957 graduate of Buford High School, and a 1961 graduate of North Georgia College with a degree in Business Administration. He was an industrial engineer at Warner's, and was later employed at the Walmart in Cumming, Ga. He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous with 28 years sobriety and was co-founder of the Serenity House in Buford, Ga. He authored the book "Peace in the Red Rock Valley," published in 2001.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2014, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Flanigan Funeral Home with Pastor Joey Grizzle officiating. Private interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Gainesville, Ga.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, Sept. 16, from 4-8 p.m.
