Jamie Dunlap Obituary

Jamie Dunlap, 53, of Lakemont, Georgia, left us suddenly on December 3, 2022. Jamie was born in Gainesville, Georgia on April 19, 1969 to Kathryn Long Dunlap (Kit) and Gayle Pearce Dunlap. After graduating from Gainesville High School, Jamie attended the University of North Georgia in Dahlonega. Jamie was the owner of Mountain Works Service Company and enjoyed serving customers around Clayton and the Lake Burton area.
Jamie was an avid outdoorsman and took full advantage of his love for the mountains and rivers of Georgia. Jamie hiked the Appalachian Trail – Maine to Georgia – and spent a great portion of his life hiking and paddling the waters and lakes of his beloved North Georgia making memories with his family, his dog Sampson, and many friends – Chris Romberg, Billy and Ursula Luesing, Dustin Rogers, Emily DeFoor, Tim Roberts and John Hash. Jamie had a zest for life and a deep faith in God. He enjoyed music, cooking, grilling, food in general, fishing in Texas, and spending time lakeside with family and friends in the great outdoors.
Most of all, Jamie loved his family. He was a devoted son and cherished his mother, Kit. Jamie adored his sister, Emily Whitfield Dunlap (Whitney), and the two shared an extremely close bond. His children, Samuel Brian Dunlap (21), and Carol Kathryn Dunlap (17), he loved whole-heartedly. Jamie was a family man and took no greater joy than being a father. His children were his light. Through caring for them, he defined the true meaning of unconditional love ¬– giving generously in every capacity.
Jamie is preceded in death by grandparents, James Gayle Dunlap and Emily Pearce Dunlap.
He is survived by aunts and uncles Sissy and Bobby Lawson of Gainesville, and Bud and Susan Long of Jasper, Alabama, and many cousins.
A gathering of friends will be held on Saturday, December 10 at 2 Dog Café (317 Spring Street in Gainesville) from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday December 11 at 3:00 p.m. at the Chattooga Belle Farm/Chattooga River (454 Damascus Church Road in Long Creek SC). In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Chattooga River Conservancy at www.chattoogariver.org.
The Dunlap family has established the Jamie Dunlap Legacy fund at the North Georgia Community Foundation to honor his memory. The fund will support causes that Jamie was passionate about and allow his legacy to live on by giving back to the community which meant so much to him. www.ngcf.org

Bill and I are so shocked and sorry to hear this. Jamie built a beautiful screened-in porch for us that became a welcome place for friends and family and folks were always impressed with his workmanship. His family will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Jamie was a good friend growing up and a fellow Eagle Scout in Troop 16. I last caught up with him at our 20 year high school reunion, and was terribly saddened to hear of his passing away. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Dunlap and Lawson families.
