Jean Shirley Bailey
Jean Shirley Bailey, 87, of Gainesville passed away Thursday December 2, 2021. Jean was born July 12, 1934, in Charlotte, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her parents, Winfred Lester Shirley and Jessie Mae Liles Shirley of Lavonia Georgia, her husband William Leslie Bailey of Bartow, her daughter Dottie Bailey of Gainesville. Jean grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. She attended the University of Georgia to be near her grandmother Hattie Shirley from Carnesville, Ga. She majored in home economics and was a Kappa Delta. Jean met William (Bill) Bailey while in college in Athens. He was an agriculture major. They were married in 1953 and bought a farm in Bartow. They were married for 48 years and had 3 children. At Bill's death, Jean moved to Gainesville, to be near her daughter, Dottie and her family. Jean was an active member of Gainesville First Baptist Church. It was there she met her second husband, Gene Calderwood. They had a happy 6 year marriage until Gene died in 2016. She was a member of many clubs and organizations. Her favorite was the Gainesville Strummers, where she played the Dulcimer. She is survived by 2 children, Claire Rockett of Gainesville, and William L. Bailey Jr. of Bartow., 4 grandchildren: Jesse Prince, Bailey Tomes, Gerald (Jerry) W. Pryor, and Leslie Pryor McIntosh and 6 great grandchildren.
