Joe Tinsley Adams Jr. Obituary

Joe Tinsley Adams Jr., age 73, of Dahlonega died at home on Sunday, July 20, 2014.

Born in Valley, Ala., to Mary Ginn Adams and Tinsley Adams, Joe graduated from Valley High School in 1958 and received a visual design degree from Auburn University in 1962. In 1960, he married Shirley Chambley Adams and they lived in Columbus, Ga., for 42 years. In 2007, Joe and Shirley relocated to Dahlonega, Ga., to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

Art was always a large part of Joe's life. He believed that every person was born with the need to create, but rules of "coloring in the lines" often caused future artists to lose their passion. His passion for art led him into a 40-year career in advertising and the creation of The Adams Communications Group.

Joe particularly enjoyed watercolor painting with landscapes being a favorite subject. He would typically photograph his subject and then paint from that image. His paintings adorn many walls of both friends' and family's homes. Joe was also a founding member of the Georgia Watercolor Society where he volunteered countless hours over the years.

Joe is survived by his wife of 54 years, Shirley Chambley Adams; daughter, Tracy Adams of Fort Mill, S.C.; and daughter and son-in-law, Amanda Adams Mercer and Brett Mercer of Gainesville, Ga; grandchildren, Emily and Courtney Smith of Fort Mill, S.C., and Morgan, Caroline and Jack Mercer of Gainesville, Ga. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Mary Frances Roberts and Dayton Roberts of Daphne, Ala. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Ginn Adams and Tinsley Adams.

Services will be held on Thursday, July 24, at Gainesville First United Methodist Church Chapel, 2780 Thompson Bridge Road, Gainesville, Ga., at 2 p.m. A family inurnment will be at Shady Grove Cemetery in Opelika, Ala.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Gainesville First United Methodist Church, 2780 Thompson Bridge Road, Gainesville, GA 30506.
