LaMartha Carter Obituary

LaMartha Godfrey Cassity Carter departed this life on Sept. 12, 2009.
Born in 1925 to the late Dovie Cooper Godfrey and David Erasmus Godfrey, she was a child of the great depression, and she never forgot its lessons of charity and thrift.
Martha lived in exciting times and exotic places as she traveled the world. A pioneer when women's options were few, she blazed new trails as a dispatcher for Southern Railroad during World War II, a geologist and gold miner in Alaska, a real estate broker, an investor and in cooking schools in Asia and Europe when women had no access. In all her roles, she as known for her adventurous heart, her great courage, her innate talents, and her exceptional kindness and her laugh, always self-effacing and always giving attributions to those who preceded her.
Known for her generosity of spirit and purse, she was a great friend, a loving mother, a loyal colleague, a compassionate benefactor, and a kind and adoring grandmother with a joyous passion for life.
She is survived by three children and their spouses, Nancy Cassity Dunlap (Marion Crawford Dunlap III) of Clemson and Columbia, S.C., Oscar Thompson Cassity Jr. (Jana Loyd Cassity) of Athens, Susan Cassity Kluge (C. Russell Kluge) of Marietta, S.C.; four grandchildren, Oscar Thompson (Casey) Cassity III, Margaret Maureen (Maggie) Cassity, Mica Morgan Kluge and McKenna Brynn Kluge and her furry four-legged companion of 18 years, Ludlow. In addition to her parents, her brother, Hillyer Cooper Godfrey preceded her in death.
Visitation will be at Little & Davenport Funeral Home on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009, from noon until the funeral hour. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Little & Davenport Funeral Home. The Rev. Bruce Fields will officiate. Interment will follow in Alta Vista Cemetery.

Offering our deepest condolences during this difficult time.

September 14, 2009

Nancy,Oscar and Susan, I never got the pleasure of meeting your mother, but I was named after her brother Hillyer. My name is Marion Hillyer Godfrey, born in the old Downey hospital in Gainesville, in 1944. Mother had heard of Hillyer Godfrey. She said if the baby she was carrying was a boy she was going to name him Hillyer. So here I am, and living in Jackson County. I'm sure your Mother was a fine person and will be sorely missed by all the family and friends. Our condolences to you and yours. Ya'll will be in our prayers during this difficult time.
