Jane Hastings Obituary

Jane Vaughn Hastings passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2015, surrounded by her family after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
Jane was born on Oct. 22, 1929, in Winston Salem, N.C., to the late Walter Vaughn and Essie Wheeler Vaughn.
After she graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School and the Medical College of Virginia, she served many years helping others as a registered nurse, social worker, substance abuse counselor and psychiatric nurse. After retiring, Jane's desire to help others led her to volunteer at the Piedmont Triad International Airport for many years.
After retiring for a second time, Jane spent her time working word puzzles, was an avid reader and enjoyed keeping up with her many friends and family. Jane took great joy in giving back through charity and regularly supported organizations that help children and protect animals.
Survivors include her son, Vaughn Hastings and his wife, Kathryn; cousin, Jackie Wheeler (and her daughters); her 'family' at Wakefield Manor; many friends far and wide, as well as her beloved cat, Finnigan Aloysius.
A celebration of Jane's life will be held on Jan. 9, 2016, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh N.C. 27612.
The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Wakefield Internal Medicine and Rex Hospital for the care and compassion that Jane received.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Jane's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or to the charity of one's choice.

Such fond memories of Mrs.Jane from my childhood. Super nice lady always enjoyed going to her house after school! Glad I got to see her a couple of years ago, still the same sweet lady. I know she will be greatly missed, you can tell from the pictures she was loved by all and will never be forgotten. Thinking of you all during this time... William Nale & Family

Vaughn & Kathryn,

I'm sorry I couldn't make it down for the service with the start of the semester looming. I love all of these photos in the gallery! She was so lovely, and always had such a great, authentic smile. I think I love her even a little more now that I know that her favorite beagle was named Duke. (That must hurt!)

I am so sorry for your loss. Personally, I will miss her smile and the great conversations we had. I think some people may have thought it a bit odd that I would chat so long on-line or on the phone with Miss Jane, but I really enjoyed her wit and sense of humor. She was smart as a tack and really so funny! And she could talk on the phone as long as I could (or was too kind to hang up on me), which made for some long chats. I remember cracking up completely the first time she called me "Dr Wow"; it came with a sharp twinkle in her eye when she said it. She often surprised me with how contemporary her thinking was, but I suppose that helps explain your even-keeled nature as well. I hate that I didn't see her on my last trip to NC, but I'm glad we had a nice long chat on the phone afterward. That conversation was one of those easy-flowing talks that we always had. It was like we had just seen each other the day before. She was one of those people you could talk to and pick right up where you left off, even if you did move to the Great White North and hadn't been around in forever. She was just so warm and easy-going. I see that in you every day.

I'm so sorry that you lost dear Jane, Vaughn, but I'm so happy that you had her -- as special as she was -- in your life for so long. You were lucky, and blessed... and so was she.

Much love,

Vaughn and Kathryn going forward the end of each year and the beginning of the new year will likely have a new and different perspective.
