Charles Griebling Obituary

Charles Jay Griebling, 90, of Galion passed away Monday, April 30, 2018 at Mill Creek Nursing Center in Galion following several years of declining health.

He was born January 28, 1928 in Columbus and was the son of the late Dr. Charles Jacob and Edna Mae (Kuch) Griebling. Charles is also preceded in death by a sister Nancy Griebling and brother-in-law Henry Stough.

Charlie graduated from Galion High School in 1945 and was proud to have been captain and quarterback of the NCO championship football team in 1944. He proudly served his country in the United States Army, Glider Infantry with his overseas duty in Sapporo, Japan. After his military service, he attended Western Reserve College in Cleveland and graduated in 1951.

He grew up in Galion and remained in Galion, his entire life. He worked in the Insurance Business, where he considered his customers his friends. He retired in 1995 after selling the Galion Insurance Service. Charlie and was an avid sports enthusiast. He enjoyed skiing and golfing, and had several "holes in one." Charlie loved traveling with family and friends in pursuing his interests of golfing and skiing. He was a member of the Galion Country Club and American Legion Scarbrough Post 243 of Galion.

Charlie had a strong love for the Lord. He was an associate member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Crestline and faithful member of First Lutheran Church in Galion, where he served on church council, taught adult Sunday school and was a Bethel Bible Series leader for many years.

He was a dedicated and loving husband of 66 years to his wife, Mary Lou (Stough) Griebling. Charles is also survived by two sons, Steven (Sue) Griebling of Cincinnati and Eric (Marcia) Griebling of Bucyrus; grandchildren Tyler (Lisa) Griebling, Charles (fiancée Cheryl Thoerner) Griebling, Hannah (Noah) Waspe all of Cincinnati, Joshua (Amber) Leitzy and Marissa (Alvin) Stinehelfer all of Bucyrus; great-grandchildren Joshua, Dylan and Jude Griebling, Kaden Leitzy and Emma Stinehelfer and a sister-in-law Jean Stough Shepard of Columbus.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 3, 2018 at First Lutheran Church, 127 South Columbus St., Galion, Ohio 44833 where a Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. with Pastors Mark Bogen and Diana Seaman officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Lutheran Church in Galion, HomeCare Matters Hospice, Gideons International or Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Crestline in care of the funeral home.

Charley was always a class guy and a true friend of my brother Jim. Charley was our insurance agent while we lived in Galion, the best we have ever had, great guy, sorry for your lose Mary Lou. But we know he is in a much better place, He and Jim are probably on the first tee right now.
