Aline Katherine Stripling

1929 - 2023

Aline Katherine (Sorina) Stripling, after a full life of 93 years, was called home by her Lord and Savior on March 27, 2023. Aline was an amazing woman, a loving wife, mother, sister, cousin, godmother, aunt, great-aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother.

Aline was born on November 26, 1929, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to the late Robert John Sorina Jr. and Anna Pauline Barriere Sorina. Four children were born through this union; Doris, Raymond, Aline, and Edvige.

Aline married James Anard Stripling Jr. on June 30, 1948, at Saint Raymond Catholic Church in New Orleans, Louisiana. Through this union of 48 years, 10 children were born; Erick James Stripling, Clarice Mary Gordon, Wayne Raymond Stripling, Anita Mary Stripling, Phil Martin Stripling, Mary T. Slaton, Anna Mary Johnson, Penny Mary Stripling, Edvige Marcia Tisdom, and Juan Christopher Stripling.

Aline and her family lived in the St. Bernard and Pontchartrain Park areas in New Orleans for many years where she was employed by the Orleans Parish Food Service School Board. In 1963, her husband James traveled to Los Angeles, California, where he pursued and successfully obtained a better employment opportunity. Later that year, Aline and their children traveled by train to join him. They laid roots in Los Angeles and were blessed with the births of their two youngest children, Edvige and Juan.

Aline loved taking care of her children. She was a great seamstress who made dresses and gowns for her daughters for special occasions. Aline always offered her children love and support individually and collectively. She shared her wisdom and the value of faith in navigating their lives and encouraged her children to follow their passion and career goals as she advocated continuous learning. Aline was also affectionately direct when providing her family with guidance, support, and inspiration. She was kind and generous; whether giving material things or setting an extra place at the table to share a meal, she had a special way of making everyone feel loved.

Aline and her husband served as Eucharistic Ministers while attending Saint Eugene's Church in Los Angeles, CA where they were recognized by the parish for their outstanding and meritorious service. They were also members of Marriage Encounter, a worldwide organization where they spoke at events, sharing valuable stories of marriage, love, family, and the power of faith.

After raising her children, Aline continued to follow her passion for caring for children by becoming a nutritionist at Morningside Early Childhood Center in Inglewood, California, where she worked for over a decade.

Proud of her Creole heritage, Aline shared Creole traditions, history, and language she learned growing up in New Orleans with her family; she also shared stories of the family legacy passed down by her parents and other relatives. Aline's roots were evident through her mastery of Creole cuisine. She was a spectacular cook and enjoyed preparing traditional Creole dishes for family and friends, such as red beans and rice, shrimp etouffee, stuffed bell peppers, po boys, and so many others, including making gumbo during the holidays.

Aline had a fun personality and enjoyed spending time with her family. She loved playing cards, dominos, and other board games, where her wit, great sense of humor, and infectious smile lit up the room. Aline enjoyed hosting family gatherings, attending celebrations, traveling, and sightseeing. When attending functions and traveling became challenging, Aline loved and appreciated receiving phone calls, cards, and visits from family, friends, and neighbors.

Aline was preceded in death by her parents, her husband James, sister Doris, brother Raymond, her son Wayne, and daughter Anita. Aline is survived by her remaining eight children, her daughters-in-law, and sons-in-law; Erick and Sharon (Jones) Stripling, Clarice Mary Gordon, Phil and Patricia (Llavanes) Stripling, Mary T. Slaton, Anna and Anthony Johnson, Penny Mary Stripling, Edvige and LaVel Tisdom, Juan and Corie (Hopson) Stripling, 25 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Aline Katherine Sorina Stripling is also survived by her sister Edvige Mary (Sorina) Fykes, and sisters-in-law Jacqueline Stripling, Carmen (Stripling) Jones, Delores (Gaines) Stripling, and Maria (Nicholson) Stripling, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors.

The family of Aline Katherine Stripling wishes to sincerely acknowledge with heartfelt gratitude and appreciation the numerous expressions of love during our time of bereavement. Thank you for your prayers, personal visits, phone calls, food, flowers, guidance and for your presence today, in celebration of our loving Mom's life. It is because of your acts of love that our hearts are filled with peace, and we are sustained and strengthened by the scripture that assures us, "Blessed are they that mourn; for they shall be comforted." A Mass of Christian funeral services honoring the life and legacy of Aline Katherine Stripling held April 14, 2023 at 10:AM at Grace Chapel, Inglewood Park Cemetery; burial at Sanctuary of Sierra Mausoleum, 720 E. Florence Avenue, Inglewood, CA 90301. Repast held at the Proud Bird, 11022 Aviation Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90045.
