Betty Ross Obituary

LINCOLNTON - Betty Gabriel Ross, 87, of Lincolnton, died Jan. 5, 2013, at Carolina Care Center in Cherryville.

Her funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at Boger City United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joe Ervin, the Rev. Allan Van Meter and the Rev. Mike Devine officiating.

Burial will follow the service at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Sunday in the sanctuary at Boger City United Methodist.

Betty was born April 23, 1925, in Goodsonville to the late Paul L. Gabriel Sr. and Lettie Goodson Gabriel.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James H. "Joe" Ross; and her brothers, Paul, JB, Charles and Steve.

Betty was a graduate of Lincolnton High School and Appalachian State Teachers College, where she was student body president and a leader in women's intramural sports. After graduation, Betty taught one year at Appalachian High School. When approached by members of a citizens commit-tee interested in developing a recreation program in Lincolnton, Betty returned to Lincoln County and became the first recreation director for the city of Lincolnton in 1947 and served in this capacity until her retirement in 1990. Betty G. Ross Park in Lincolnton is a tribute to her 43 years of devoted service to Lincolnton and Lincoln County.

In addition to her duties as recreation director, Betty was a wonderful wife, mother and awesome Nana. She gave substantial time to social, charitable and church causes. She served as a member of the Cancer Board, the Rail-Trail committee, a member of the Eastern Star and president of Democrat Women, to mention a few. In 1967, Betty was recognized as Lincoln County Woman of the Year. She held many roles and was an active member of Boger City United Methodist Church. Betty continued to serve her church and community as long as she was physically able.

Mrs. Ross is survived by two daughters, Libby Fletcher and husband Louis, Pat Ross and special friend, Jerry Gold, all of Lincolnton; three grandsons, Ross Fletcher and wife, Lindsey, of Cornelius, Patrick Fletcher and wife, Lauryn, of Huntersville, and Joe Fletcher and wife, Jordyn, of Lincolnton; one great-granddaughter, Tatum Fletcher, of Cornelius; brother, Shirley Gabriel and wife, Betty, of Rutherfordton; sister-in-law, Dottie Gabriel of McLean, Va.; and numerous special nieces and nephews.

The family would like to give special thanks to loving caregiver Catherine Nichols, the Lincoln County Hospice Team and the staff at Carolina Care Center.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Lincoln County, 107 N. Cedar Street, Lincolnton, NC 28092, or to Boger City United Methodist Church, 2320 E. Main St., Lincolnton, NC 28092.

My deepest sympathy's and heart felt love to the entire GABRIEL family and the extended family.

I had the opportunity to meet Betty G. Ross through family members. I was the companion to Elsie Mae Summey Gabriel of Lincolnton, (married to Paul Gabriel) of Lincolnton NC who pre-deceased (sister of Betty Gabriel Ross).I was Elsie Gabriel's companion in Raleigh after Paul passed away.

On several occasions (thanks to SG & Betty Gabriel of Rutherfordton) I was able to meet Betty G. Ross. She welcomed me into her home, which was located at the end of the road so to speak…. I would refer to it as the “Gabriel Estate” because of their beautiful property. Betty G. Ross would welcome and treat me as if I was family. To my surprise she would remember me on each visit and lets not forget they would always fed me well. Especially, Chris Gabriel's homemade chocolate pound cake. The family will and should be remembered by their wit and humor; especially between Betty G. Ross and her Brother SG Gabriel. The family was "family"...something you don't see much of today. Something you wished carried on in families today. You admired them for their love, devotion and genuine care for each other. I was always “warmed” by the true family love they shared…. And to be part of it was WONDERFUL, an expression of genuine love for family and friends.

ALL THE GABRIELS come from a strong stock and very determined! I understand this was very much in play in her last days. My heart weighs heavy today in her passing. I know she knew the Lord so she is with HIM now…. until it is our turn to meet up with the Lord.

I know that her contribution to society will live long. To have a street named after you, to be Woman of the Year, to have a recreation center named after you and much, much more. The name GABEIEL NAME IS STRONG. How strong is the name...recently I met a young fellow in Raleigh who is from Lincolnton and he knew EXACTLY who I was speaking of when I mentioned Betty G. Ross of Lincolnton… he mentioned the recreation center before I could mention Betty G. Ross's name.

My thoughts and prayers are with SG & Betty Gabriel, Libby and Louis Fletcher, Pat and Jerry, the grandkid (who are adults) who I met all because of my friendship with Elsie. My heart is with you all during this sad time. I hope you are able to read this and know that sadness dwells here in Raleigh with me. Keep Betty Gabriel Ross's legacy living through sharing your memories of her contribution to society. I know it was wonderful for her to see her GreatGrand Baby....what a joy that must have been for her.. Remember her in all that you do... think of her fondly and know that she lives on in all of us who's lives she has touched including mine.

Sympathy from Raleigh….Chrissie Jaje

This is so sad for many reasons. I loved Betty and always thought she was so special. I grew up with her at the recreation center, plus she was a special, always a fun, aunt to me. My love and thoughts go out to Libby and Pat and family.
