Lamar Stroupe Obituary

DALLAS- Lamar Wesley (Yock) Stroupe, 91, passed away December 18, 2020, at Morningside of Gastonia after a battle with pneumonia.
He was born January 22, 1929, to the late Henry and Wilma Arthurs Stroupe. A native and lifelong resident of Dallas, most people simply knew him as Yock, a nickname he acquired as a young boy that stuck with him his entire life. A business man and entrepreneur, Yock was involved in many career endeavors through the years including real estate and home building. In 1975 he started Dallas Paint and Glass which he owned and operated for more than 35 years. He never met a stranger, and will be remembered for his warm and friendly demeanor as well as his outgoing and engaging personality.
Yock attended Porter Gaud Military Academy in Charleston, SC, and graduated from Gastonia High School in 1949. From there, he went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, majoring in Business Administration and was a member of Chi Phi Fraternity. He proudly served his country in the US Army as a Private First Class during the Korean War, 1951 – 1953. He was honorably discharged and returned to Chapel Hill to complete his studies, and met the love of his life, Miss Eddie Jean. He completed his degree at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, yet it was always UNC that was his true alma mater. Yock was a lifelong member of Holy Communion Lutheran Church, and a member of Gaston Masonic Lodge #263 in Dallas for more than 50 years.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Eddie Jean Harris Stroupe, and sister Faye Stroupe Best. Survivors are daughters Laura Jean Stroupe, Ellen Harris Stroupe (fiancé Jim Helfrich); brother-in-law, James Best; nieces, Janet Pyatt (Jim) and Joanna Huggins (Wes), nephew Martin Best (Janie); and numerous other great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Holy Communion Lutheran Church, 103 West Church Street, Dallas, NC 28034.

I am just now learning of Lamar's passing. I am assuming be knew me all of my life. One he had the paint store I saw a lot of Lamar. Always made we laugh over something. I would ask Betty Houser about Lamar since they were both at Morningside. I know the family will miss his humor. In today's world we need more humor.

I worked at Morningside of Gastonia while Lamar lived there. He was the sweetest man. He always had a smile on his face and he would always ask how you were doing. Lamar loved to go sit outside in the courtyard. I liked to sit outside with him while I took my breaks during the day. He would tell me stories about things or tell me what has been going on at the facility. He loved to talk to his daughters, he always wanted me to help him dial the phone at night so he could get a hold of them. I will definitely miss Lamar.
