Martin D’Amore Obituary

GASTONIA - Dr. Martin James D'Amore, 48, passed away peacefully on Jan. 28, 2015, at CaroMont Regional Medical Center after a long courageous battle with ALS.

A native of Chicago, Illinois, he was the son of George Salvatore D'Amore and the late Dolores Marie Hansen D'Amore. Marty was a graduate of Fenwick High School in Chicago. He received his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Illinois and received his Medical Degree from Rush University Medical School in Chicago. He performed his radiology residency at Loyola University and completed an interventional radiology fellowship at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. His career was spent as a partner with Gaston Radiology. He actively practiced his faith at St. Michael Catholic Church and Belmont Abbey as well as through the Order of Malta. He continued to enjoy an active life despite his illness, through his family, friends and traveling. After his retirement in 2011, he authored "Joy and Suffering" My Life With ALS.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael Catholic Church with Father Matthew Buettner and Abbot Placid Solari officiating.

A graveside service will be held 12:15 p.m. Saturday at Belmont Abbey Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia.

Survivors include his wife, Dr. Kirsten Gross D'Amore; sons, William George D'Amore and Martin John D'Amore; daughter, Cecilia Dolores D'Amore; father, George Salvatore D'Amore; brothers, Michael D'Amore, Thomas D'Amore and Taylor D'Amore; sisters, Gabrielle Reidner, Michelle Corcoran, Georgia Jansen and Danielle Klein; nieces and nephews, Jessica Neubel, Emmett Reidner, Adam Jansen, Shannon Corcoran, Patrick Jansen, Hannah Corcoran, Delaney D'Amore, Quinn Corcoran and Devin D'Amore.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Belmont Abbey, 100 Belmont-Mt. Holly Road, Belmont, NC 28012 or to St. Michael Catholic Church, 704 St. Michaels Lane, Gastonia, NC 28052 or to The Joe Martin ALS Foundation, 100 N. Tryon St., Suite 3420, Charlotte, NC 28202.
