Dear Barb, Nan and Ben and family,
We were so sorry to hear about Barney. He sure was such a warm and kind man and a wonderful neighbor. We have so many fond memories of him and your family. We especially remember all the kindness your family shared when I was recovering from my ruptured spleen. I have his autograph in my book and it reads "As you slide down the banister of life remember me as a splinter in your career." We also have a picture of your family with Barney playing a guitar in our family room on Dover Rd. We cherish all our New Year's eve get togethers Our family always thought the world of him and all of you. We were all so saddened to hear about him.

In the early 1990's I served as Chancellor at UNC Asheville, and saw a lot of Barney. He was a kind and generous mentor. WCU and UNCA had a history of some contention, and Barney was determined to put an end to that unfortunate culture. He welcomed me to Cullowhee and to Western. I was and am grateful for his leadership and friendship, and I admire his focused and energetic chancellorship at WCU.

I had not seen Barney in more than 50 years, but he was an inspiration to me during my early life. I grew up across the street from his house, and when he went off to college, his parents (Mark and Violet) sort of adopted me as a godchild. To this day, I still have Barney's old Boy Scout Handbook (actually, it was Air Scouts during World War II), which Violet gave to me when I was a cub scout. I was always kept aware of his accomplishments and he served as an inspiration to show that a kid from Albany could succeed in college and the world at large. I don't remember many others from Albany getting a doctoral degree, but Barney did, and subsequently so did I. The last communication I remember from him was when my father died. He sent me a note telling me how much he liked my father (who was also named Myron). That meant so much to me that an esteemed college president would take the time to write to someone he knew as only a little kid. My best wishes to Barbara, Ben, and Nan.

Dear Ben and Nan, I also remember your family from Dover Rd. We lived in the yellow brick house at the end of the sreet. I used to baby sit you and I have forgiven you for locking me out of the house. I am sad to hear of your father's passing. I remember him as a man of humor and your mother as a kind, caring person. My prayers are with you and your families.

Dear Mrs. Coulter, Nan and Ben,
I am very sorry to learn of Dr. Coulter's death. He was a wonderful man and will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. My memories of Dr. Coulter return to Dover Road where I had the chance to know him as a wonderful dad, playing catch in the yard with Ben and Nan, a dear family friend, hosting many gatherings to view slides of your family travels, and of course, of the trips to the 63 Ranch that our families shared. Dr. Coulter was a friend to all who met him and had the ability to genuinely extend kindness and interest to everyone he met. I am so glad that I was able to know him, even for a brief portion of his life.
May you all find comfort in your memories of his life and in the assurance of his deep love for you. You are in my thoughts and prayers during this time of deep sadness and loss.

The University, community and his and Barbara's wide circle of friends are less vibrant without Barney. Within minutes of shaking his hand, you knew you had met someone with integrity, open attitude, wit and the kind of intelligence good for book smarts and walking around smarts. So sorry to hear of his death. We carry his family in our thoughts, Susan and Gary Gulbransen

Dr. Coulter was my mentor and friend for 33 years. I owe my own career to him as he provided guidance and wisdom unselfishly since 1978. My wife and I will miss him and wish Barbara and the family nothing but the best in the future without him being by their side. Cliff and Karen Trump, Goodyear, Arizona

I am so saddened to hear of the passing of such a fine gentleman, an excellent chancellor, and a person I considered to be a friend. I had the privilege to sit and talk with Dr. Coulter for two hours his second day on the job. We were educational colleagues and instant friends. I am so grateful that he and Barbara came to Western Carolina University. What a great man!
