Richard & Tammy,
Please know that our thoughts and prayers are w/you and your family. We met Nic severals ago at a ballgame w/you. Such a terrific young man. We are so sorry and I know words are sometimes hollow in this situation but please know we thank Nic and your family for our freedom!

June 28, 2011

Richard & Tammy,

You may not remember us,we moved away from NC several years ago, but we spend alot of time together while our boys were younger, between Pop Warner Football & Stanley Rec basketball. We have very fond memories of Nic as a young boy. Our son not only played ball with Nic, but Richard also coached our son, Josh. It was both our privledge and honor to have known Nic.
I can not express how deeply saddened we are for your loss.

It was great to be able to speak with you yesterday. Hopefully you'll remember the phone call as it will be too hard to remember all the faces for the next couple of weeks. Again, Rodney and Sweden also send their heartfelt thoughts to the both of you (and Haley) which we haven't seen for many years - our thoughts are with her as well. We graciously thank Nic for his service and sacrifice to our Country! How extremely proud you must be of your son! I am so sorry for your loss.I didnt know Nic but Im friends with Haley and I just wanted to say that the family and friends are in my prayers.Hes in better hands now and God has another angel. I love you Haley O'Brien.

June 17, 2011

I don't even know how to start to tell you how heart broken we are. I can't imagine having to face this kind of tragedy as a mother. As a part of the "ball family" that we have been privileged to be a part of, the loss of any of our boys is something we never thought we would have to face. Please know that you are in our hearts and our prayers each and everyday. I'm so thankful for the friendship that Nic showed and just as thankful for the friendships that we have because of Nic. His love for life showed in everything that he done. This world can take away a lot of things, but good friends and memories are ours forever.

Dear O'Brien family & friends: Our hearts are simply broken for you. We hold dear so many memories of the boys playing ball together over the years. We remember Nic's smile and cut-up character. Opponents often underestimated Nic because he wasn't the biggest on the team but when he hit the field they soon learned he had big talent and heart. We were blessed to know him. We will never forget him. We are profoundly grateful for Nic's service and scrifice. May the comfort and strength of God surround you today and always.

WE ARE SO SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS.THERE'S NOT ENOUGH WORDS TO EXPRESS HOW DEEPLY SADDENED WE ARE. WE FELT A CONNECTION TO ALL THE BALLPLAYERS WE WATCHED THROUGH THE YEARS.THEY WERE ALL SPECIAL KIDS. ONE OF THE THINGS WE REMEMBER MOST ABOUT NIC WAS HIS GRIN. DURING THE GAME HE WORE THIS I MEAN BUSINESS FACE,BUT EVERY NOW AND THEN THAT GRIN WOULD PEEP OUT.NIC WAS NOT THE BIGGEST IN STATURE, BUT HE DIDN'T LET THAT STOP HIM. IT DIDN'T MATTER WHAT SIZE THE GUY ON BASE WAS, IF NIC DECIDED HE WAS GOING, HE WENT! IN THE OUTFIELD, THERE WAS NONE BETTER, IF HE HAD TO CUT A FLIP, TO CATCH THAT BALL, HE DID ! HE WAS A GREAT KID AND AN EVEN BETTER MAN. DOUBLE NICKLE ,YOU ARE MISSED.

this is all so unbelievable. no words can heal the o'brien & black family. it kills me to see his friends and family and loved ones hurting. gaston county has something to be proud of. we have a hometown hero, who was a wonderful person with a wonderful soul. he was loved by so many, i didn't get the pleasure of knowing nic as well as others, but i have heard stories from doug about baseball, and for a short time towards the end of rec ball i was introduced to these guys who are incredible boys who've grown to be strong men. they have lost a brother. my heart and prayers go out to everyone who's heart nic has
touched. his memory will last forever and we all will see him again someday. god has a much bigger plan for nic. his soul was too good for the world. i pray that these next few weeks, months, and years peace fills everyone's heart. i personally thank you nic for serving this country for our freedom and rights. rest easy and in peace you'll see everyone again someday. only the good die young, right?

Richard Tammy & Haley I am so heart broken to hear of Nic's death in Afghanistan. It is a terrible shock to hear the news. You have my heartfelt sympathy.
I can't say enough good things about Nic. He was a wonderful person and had such a great sense of purpose and a strong patriotism that was an inspiration to us all. I remember the day Tug talked to him about going; he was very determined, which made us so sad and proud at the same time.
I will always have wonderful memories of him growing up. It seemed like we spent more time at a ball field with Trey and the other guys than we did at home, and we didn't mind in the least.
Your family has suffered the greatest tragedy and our community and country have suffered a tremendous loss as well. I know that you are proud of Nic and so are all of us. He will be sorely missed.
Stay strong and God Bless.
