Norman Staples Obituary

BELMONT - Norman Hamilton Staples, 85, died Feb. 10, 2008, at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia.

He was a native of Durham and was the son of the late Alex Terrell Staples and Fannie Kate Williamson Staples.

Mr. Staples was raised in Durham where he graduated from Durham High School before serving as an Air Force pilot and officer during World War II. Following the war, he enjoyed a successful career in retail merchandising with Ellis-Stone and Thalhimers in Durham before relocating to Charlotte in the 1960s where he worked with Collins, Peebles, and Goodwill Industries before retiring. He was married twice - first to Bonnie Keeter of Durham and then to the late Virginia Dixon of Richmond, Va.

Survivors include his children, Skip Staples of Danbury, Benjamin Staples of Durham, Kathy Corum of Mooresville and David Staples and wife Ana of Charlotte; grandchildren, Graham Staples, Jay Staples, Aimee Corum, Ashley Corum, Amber Corum, Reno Staples and Andrew Staples; long-time friend, Kathy Stewart of Charlotte; and sisters, Marie Johnson, Mary Chandler and Thelma Scott, all of Durham.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by several siblings.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Founders Chapel of McLean Funeral Directors in Gastonia.

Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Grace Baptist Church in Durham.

Visitation is 1 until 2 p.m. Friday at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia.

Pastor John Stanley will be officiating.

i was sorry to read of normans passing.he was quite a character and a true golf nut.norman gave me a job when i really needed one.he was always the consumate professional when i worked with him at collins/peebles.i saw him a few times at the golf course in belmont with "the lunch bunch" and he was the same ole norman.he still called me "slim".he was a nice man and i am sure he will be always loved and truly missed.
