Donald Houger, 78, passed away peacefully at his home on August 25, 2025, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Born on October 3, 1946, in Alexandria, Minnesota, Don lived a life marked by dedication to his family, faith in Christ, and a strong work ethic. He is survived by his wife, Jean; three children, Troy (Heidi), Corey (Sarah), and Nicolle (Dave); and eight grandchildren Tristan, Seth, Svea, Avah, Landon, Levi, Abbi, and Maci.
Don pursued his passion for education early in life, earning a Master's degree in Elementary Education in Fargo, North Dakota. He began his professional journey as a teacher, where he touched the lives of many young students with his commitment and care. In 1990, Don embarked on a new chapter when he purchased BJ's Velvet Freez, a business he proudly owned and operated until his retirement in 2003. His transition from educator to entrepreneur reflected his adventurous spirit and willingness to embrace new challenges.
At the heart of Don's life was his beloved wife, Jean. Married for 57 years, their bond was one of unwavering love and mutual respect. Together they built a life centered around family and shared experiences. Don was a devoted father who took great pride in supporting his children and grandchildren—whether it was lending a hand with projects or cheering from the sidelines at sporting and music events.
Don found joy in the outdoors and spent countless hours hunting and fishing. These pursuits were more than hobbies—they were opportunities to connect with nature and share meaningful time with those he loved. In later years, Don developed a passion for classic cars. He enjoyed restoring them and showing them with pride at local events.
Those who knew Don remember him as hard-working, caring, adventurous, and selfless. He consistently put others before himself and found fulfillment in helping those around him succeed. His legacy is one of quiet strength and enduring love—a man who led by example and left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire acts of kindness and devotion for generations to come. A memorial gathering will be held on September 4, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Faith Evangelical Free Church, 6065 Oakwood Blvd.
