David, Kathy, and Steven,
I was a student at Colorado College from 1963 through 1967 and worked at the College for 2 years after graduation as an assistant to Gilbert Johns, who was then Dean of the Summer Session. While I did not take a class from your father, he was someone with whom I had many informal conversations throughout my time as a student, as a young administrator, and later as an alumnus returning to Colorado Springs for alumni reunions. Your father was kind, thoughtful, engaging, and always insightful in talking about issues large and small. While I am unable to attend the memorial service in person, I wanted to convey my deep appreciation for your father and my sadness at his passing. He was part of a group of professors at Colorado College who were extraordinary teachers and mentors who together created an environment that stimulated respectful conversations about serious (and sometimes not so serious) issues. My condolences for your loss.

Joe Pickle was one of my professors at Colorado College (class of 1976). He took a special interest in me, and we stayed in contact after my graduation. He once invited me to return to the college to teach a semester-long course, which was for me a thrilling experience. We used to meet for dinner every year at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Religion. I last visited him in Colorado Springs in 2018 or 2019, and we had a delightful conversation. I will always be grateful for the encouragement he gave me as a young scholar. He was extraordinarily thoughtful and kind, and a person of deep faith and with a deep commitment to the church. How good it is to remember his life, even as we lament his death.

Joe had a special and truly authentic presence that somehow calmed the world around him. Among the faculty at CC, some of who had an almost theatrical vibe about them, Joe had a true sweetness to his character that radiated refined wisdom and purposeful virtue. He was a quintessentially Just Man.

This is a huge loss for me. I was a religion major and he was my adviser/advisor and one of my most cherished profs. I was in their home a few times through the years. He loved a religion/philosophy writer and author by the name of Schleiermacher. We joked about that course many times through the years in which we studied his teachings. Joe was a great guy, a very dedicated CC professor who was a strong believer in the block plan and embraced travel and granting course credit if religion or religious thought was studied. I was given credit for going to Israel for a block my sophomore or junior year when I worked on a kibbutz and read a book called, "Border Kibbutz", published in 1971, just in time for my study there! I still have that book. I believe we only had 5 or 10 religion majors in 1973 when we graduated. Judy was also cherished as a wonderful wife, joy to be around, and great cook.
I just found my notes from his Intro to Religion course in which we studied many religious philosophies in 1971.
He was one of the very last of my professors who was still alive. I miss him terribly since I hadn't seen or talked to him in quite some time.
