Carl Moos

NORTHAMPTON - Carl Moos died on Dec. 25, 2013, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield. He succumbed to a rare disease named amyloidosis. He was 83 years old.
Carl was an intelligent, strong man but gentle in spirit who touched many lives. He was a man of science, a practical man skilled in carpentry and with an interest in local farms, an active man who loved traveling and hiking, and a life-long political activist.
Carl's father, Robert Imandt, was a violinist and photographer. His mother was Elizabeth Moos (Smith College, class of 1911), a force in the political movements of her time, and a co-founder of the progressive school which Carl attended. W.E.B. DuBois was a visitor in their home. Carl attended the Bronx High School of Science, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and held a PhD from Columbia, where he met and married Joan Rosenbaum. They had three children - Kathy, Sue, and Dan.
At the University of Buffalo the couple was part of the group who thwarted the attempts of the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) to do their work on that campus. Their growing young family marched against the Vietnam War. As a professor at SUNY Stony Brook, Carl's research was in how muscles contract, but his chief interest was in teaching undergraduate biology, counseling students, and mentoring graduate students and colleagues. After long careers, Joan and Carl retired in 1992 to Northampton. Joan died in 2004.
Carl met Sally Weiss at the Saturday anti-war vigil. Married in 2007, they continued to work together on issues of war and peace. Carl became the stepfather of Sally's children, Nathaniel and Elizabeth Weiss.
Carl's daughter Kathy Cassidy lives with her wife Laura in New Hampshire and is the mother of three of Carl's grandchildren - Liz Campbell, the mother of Carl's great-grandson Rori; Jesse Campbell; and Jenn Campbell. Carl's son Dan lives with his wife Diane in California; they are the parents of Jason Moos. Sue married John McGraw of New York and had two children - Sara and David McGraw. Sue died of ovarian cancer in 2008. Carl had two half-brothers who predeceased him and leaves a half-sister, Ann Remington, and a niece, Gale Remington.
There will be a memorial gathering for Carl on June 21 at the Northampton Friends Meetinghouse. Carl donated his body to UMass Medical School. Memorial gifts can be sent to the Western MA American Friends Service Committee, 2 Conz Street, Northampton.
