Constance Fitzgerald Obituary

Constance Violet Fitzgerald of Haydenville died peacefully at her home after a seven year battle with ovarian cancer on January 25, 2019, at the age of sixty-six.

Connie was born on January 10, 1953, in Baltimore, Maryland to Louellyn Freeman Fitzgerald and Robert Edward Fitzgerald, both of who predeceased her. Connie grew up in Dundalk, Maryland, before traveling and living for short periods in North Carolina, California, Colorado, Maine, and Italy.

Connie was drawn to the Pioneer Valley in the late 1970s, with its women's bookstore, free clinics, and food coops, to attend college. She started at Stockbridge School of Agriculture before graduating with a bachelor's degree in Plant and Soil Science from UMass Amherst.

In the early 1980's while still attending college, Connie began working for the Peace Development Fund as a work-study student. She worked at PDF for over twenty-five years, as a bookkeeper, interim executive director, and Director of Administration and Finance. Unofficially, Connie served as glue, pillar, cheerleader, stabilizer, calming presence, and a good friend to many.

In 2007, Connie joined the staff of Spirit in Action as the Operations and Finance Director. Connie served on the board of the Solidago Foundation and the Meekins Library in Williamsburg where she contributed her wisdom, common sense, and loving spirit.

Connie cultivated simple pleasures and instilled that gift in her daughter, Annie. She gloried in the sunshine, fresh air, her chickens, her garden, and her home. Connie made and found sanctuary in her home; creating a peaceful and beautiful home, both inside and outside, that nourished her and others who had the pleasure of visiting.

Connie and her daughter Annie had the special joy of being good friends. Since her cancer diagnosis in 2012, Connie purposely made time for the good in life: garden tours, day trips around New England, vacations to Maine and Cape Cod, spending time with friends and family, and cultivating her home and garden.

Connie leaves behind her beloved daughter, Catherine Anne Fitzgerald, dear brother, Terrence Richard Fitzgerald, sister-in-law Deborah Fitzgerald, nephew Matthew David Fitzgerald, his wife and stepchildren, as well as many dear friends. Saying she will be missed is a monumental understatement.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, contributions may be made to either the Cancer Connection in Northampton (www.cancer-connection.org) or the Meekins Library in Williamsburg (www.meekins-library.org).

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2019, at 2:00 p.m., at Unitarian Society of Northampton and Florence, a simple reception to follow. She will be buried later in Williamsburg at the convenience of her family.

Dear Anne,
I was on the board of PDF 1990-2000. Connie was such an authentically sweet person. She embodied grace and compassion. Her presence had a huge impact on the culture of the organization. I had not seen Connie in many years. I have wonderful memories of her, that beautiful smile and her warm hugs. You and your family have my condolences.

Dear Anne,
I hadn't seen your Mom in many years or you since you were a baby. I met her and learned of her illness and passing through our mutual close friend Rose. I knew her in Baltimore, and she graciously opened her home in Northampton to me many, many years ago while I was looking for a place to live. She was a warm and rare spirit. My sincere best wishes to you and a blessing on her memory.

Anne,
I always enjoyed interacting with you and your mom, both together and when you came in separately into Bread Euphoria. She was a wonderful woman and she absolutely adored you and was so proud of whatever you did. She always spoke fondly about all the special projects you helped her with or did yourself. I thought it was so endearing that she called me Miss Lisa. She touched a lot of our hearts with her smile and her kindness. She will be dearly missed. My condolences to you and your family.

Dear Annie,
I am so sad to hear of the loss of your mother. I used to live across the street from the both of you. I had the pleasure of getting to know your Mom a little and would especially enjoy watching the way she mowed your beautiful lawn. She was a determined, strong and courageous woman. And she clearly adored you.

Condolences to Connie's family and friends, especially her daughter, Anne. I met Connie over 40 years ago, and haven't seen her in many years. She was such a generous and genuinely kind person. Her smile the same in her photo here, as in my memory. She touched so many people in her lifetime, and I'm grateful to have known her for however short a time.

Anne, you won't remember me but I remember you, and your mom. I worked at pdf from 2001 to 2005. Connie really was the glue. So much grace, so much love. Be well dear girl. May your memories help buoy you as you move through the stages of grief. Deep grief signifies deep and abiding love, and that is something your mom had for you, deep abiding love. In peace,

Linda Tucker, Solidago

Dear Anne,
What a beautiful tribute to your mom. In describing her to my friends and family I've used the words "A remarkable woman." You have described her, her life, and her spirit so beautifully. Yes, to say she will be missed is an understatement. We're always here for you. (And so is Norah, for puppy kisses)
