Daniel Nitzsche Obituary

Daniel M. Nitzsche

Deerfield, MA - Daniel M. Nitzsche, 66, of Deerfield, MA, died on March 5, 2026 at home as he wished after a seven-month journey with pancreatic cancer.

Born on February 24, 1960 in Holliston, Ma, Dan was a son, brother, friend, husband and father to many he loved in a life that was much too short. Despite the challenges of chemotherapy, he maintained a positive attitude throughout his treatments, never focusing on himself. His outlook on life is exemplified by his advice to others: work hard but remember to take time to do the things you enjoy.

A teacher, outdoorsman, first-rate cook, cyclist and skier, Dan loved to telemark ski at Berkshire East so much that people thought he worked there. He was able to take one last run on opening day this winter which was invaluable to him. His travels with family took him to many beautiful environments - all with nature field guides in hand. His high school friends called him Nature Nitch - the go-to guy for anything in the environment.

An educator at heart, Dan began his working life with adolescents, traveling from the east coast to the southwestern United States to mix environmental education with outdoor activities. A non-traditional learner, he obtained a bachelor's degree in environmental education from the University Without Walls at UMass-Amherst. He worked for 28 years as an environmental consultant with a specialty in wetlands consulting-most of those years for GZA GeoEnvironmental in Springfield, MA. He trained many in field research techniques throughout his career.

Dan leaves behind his wife Bea, their daughter Emily and son Kyle; his siblings Dawn, Brenda (Jeff), Brian (Stella) and many nieces and nephews. The family is thankful for John Lee, his telemark skiing friend for decades, who took him to chemo treatments; Tom Waldron who coordinated biweekly visits from high school friends; Paula Manner who supported the family in untold ways during his final days and Jim Abel for whom there are no words that suffice to express the depth of gratitude for the medical and personal support provided.

A celebration of Dan's life will be held at Quonquont Farm in Whatley in early August. Please contact [email protected] for more information. In the meantime, spend some time outdoors in places Dan would appreciate. Donations may be made to his choice of charity: St Jude Children's Research Hospital www.stjude.org.
