Daniel Oleksak Obituary

Daniel Anthony Oleksak, age 71, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2020 at his home after a challenging, three-year journey with cancer. He was cared for by some of the most kind and brilliant professionals in their field. He was strong-willed and positive, never complaining and never giving up hope-an inspiration to his loved ones. Danny was known for his strong dedicative work ethic, positive attitude, humble persona and fun-loving nature. He was quirky and one of a kind. You would rarely see him without his John Deere cap or a big smile. He always had a story to tell. Danny loved his simple life, and it was hard not to love him.

Danny was born in Westfield, MA on December 8, 1948 to the late Andrew T. Jr. and Salamea (Sally) (Bannish) Oleksak. Danny grew up in Westfield, alongside his family-run business, Oleksak Lumber, founded in 1922. The family often spent their summers at their farm in Chesterfield, MA. He attended Holy Trinity Elementary School and Saint Mary's High School, both in Westfield. He went on to study at Holyoke Community College and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, earning a Master of Forestry in 1974 while concurrently serving in the Air National Guard. He was a licensed forester, timber harvester and land surveyor and co-owned the family's fourth generation lumber business with his brother, Andy. He was actively involved in local conservation commissions, the Massachusetts Forest Alliance, the Massachusetts Association of Land Surveyors and the Massachusetts Farm Bureau. He took pride in managing and cultivating the family-owned timberlands in order to carry on his predecessors' legacy to future generations. He loved being in the woods, surrounded by the trees and wildlife-where he found peace and calm. He was often known for being accompanied in his truck by one or more of the family dogs on his everyday adventures.

Danny married his wife Charlcy in 1974 when they settled in Granville to raise their family. They became heavily rooted in a caring, selfless and fun-loving community of neighbors and friends. Danny volunteered his time as a little league coach, worked hard to park cars in the center of town during the annual Harvest Fair-donating all of the money earned to the town. On the fourth of July his responsibility was that of the 'corn man' at the annual BBQ and dance on the town green. He will be missed dearly by his community. He was a man of many skills. He had any tool or piece of equipment on hand that was needed and was constantly going above and beyond to lend a hand to any of his friends, family and neighbors in need. He served on the town finance and conservation committees and committed many volunteer hours to the Granville Federated Church. He and his wife enjoyed many travels around the world-Danny made friends wherever he would go. He was fortunate to take a trip to Eastern Europe with his daughter, visiting the small villages from which his family immigrated.

Danny leaves his wife of 45 years, Charlcy (Stallsmith) Oleksak. He also leaves his son Nathan Daniel Oleksak and daughter-in-law Ann C. Nordahl. He leaves his daughter Katie Bannish Oleksak and cherished granddaughter Lily Daniel Oleksak. He took pride in being a grandfather-he and his granddaughter could not stop smiling whenever they were around one another. He was sweet, sensitive and loving to all of his family. He also leaves his brother, Andrew T. Oleksak III and wife Modwyn; his sister Donna Michel and wife Pat Sicard; his sister Jo-Ann Orluk and husband Stephen; and sister and brother-in law Nan and Gary Pease. Danny also leaves behind beloved nieces and nephews; Jennifer, Sarah, Charlotte, Nick, Andrew & Jessa; Rebecca, Mark and Kristen and many great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles who adored him-everybody loved their 'Uncle Danny'. While he is no longer here with his family in the present, he will forever be in their hearts.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00PM on Saturday October 24, 2020 in the Silver Street Cemetery, Silver Street, Granville . Family and friends are requested to practice social distancing and to wear a mask.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Danny's name to the Granville Federated Church, PO Box 246, Granville, MA 01034 or to the Mass General Cancer Center at Cooley Dickinson Hospital, PO Box 329, Northampton, MA 01060 . Southwick Forastiere Funeral Home, 624 College Highway, Southwick is entrusted with arrangements. www.forastiere.com

There are no words as to what to make of the last year. That man is missed. He had life figured out while he was blessed to be with us, here on earth-his heaven. I tell my daughter to every single day how grampa loves us and lives in our hearts. Humble, sweet, loving and without explanation needed-always true to himself. The denial, anger and numbness are very real, the acceptance is stronger, but most challenging and sickening. I love you, my dear papa, for as long as I have been a part of you, and always will. We think of you only with smiles and hearts that are broken, but busting with love for you, the one and only Danny Oleksak

I feel comforted, knowing that you are at rest now, with your Lord and friends and family that passed before you. I can just picture you with our beloved dogs, joined together once again.
I love you, my sweetie ❤

For as long as I can remember, my father has been my favorite person in the world. To know him is to love him. As biased as I am, he could do no wrong in my eyes. Anytime with him, it didn't matter what we were doing, felt like Christmas Day. Just sitting there doing nothing, my heart would burst with love for him. He could make you laugh without trying, which made him even funnier. When he would get frustrated, trying to explain his impossible-to-explain way of doing things, I would love him even more. He was caring, positive, down-to-earth, goofy, practical, sweet, sensitive, funny, intelligent, awkward and one-of-a-kind. He was a favorite among many.

He was a the hardest working person that I knew. He never asked for anything from anybody. Learning from a young age to work hard and earn the life that he deserved. He enjoyed the freedom of doing what he loved and not considering it work. To this day, I have never met anyone who lived quite like that. He always said he would work until his last days. Which is exactly what he did. We were out-and-about with him watching him do his thing, until just a few days before he passed. He never once complained.

He was a dedicated father and husband. He showed up, stood by our sides and built a foundation for a loving family. He was the exact same way as a grandfather. He should still be here and have had more time with his cherished granddaughter, Lily Daniel, who will proudly carry on his name. He was 'meant to be' a grandfather. The kind of guy that kids (and animals, especially dogs!) flocked to and loved unconditionally because of his gentle, unspoken, fun-loving and innocent nature.

Unfortunately, life does not have any particular rhyme or reason, and cancer does not discriminate. May we be mindful to cherish our days on earth with our loved ones. May my father live on in the spirit of all that loved him and may we keep his memory alive with the stories that we tell of our cherished time with him on this earth. May the thought of him always bring the same, beautiful, full-of-life smile to our faces that he brought to all those around him when he was here with us.

Through a broken heart, I send endless love and gratitude to my father always and forever.

Charlcy, we are sad to hear the news and we send our condolences to you and all of your family. I always enjoyed the times that Danny and I were at the same function or gathering or just bumping into him at the store. He always had that smile that spoke so many words of encouragement and friendship. He is a man that will be missed. Charlcy, we wish all the best to you and your family that life has to give. I'm sure you will never run out of wonderful memories that you had with Danny. And you!! Keep that beautiful smile that you have always had too. Our prayers are said for all of you.

Words can not express how much I will miss Danny. Whether he was teasing me about how many shoes I had, calling me to remind me to start up my generator, or driving a front loader tractor two miles down Silver Street to plow out snow at my house, or the twinkle in his eyes when he was about to tell a story, so many memories of a dear man and special friend. My heart, thoughts and prayers for you, Charlcy, and all the Oleksak family.

I loved Danny. I remember when Charley met him and telling us about him. She was in love. They met at Friendlys Ice Cream. He told the story of how he kept going there trying to get the nerve to ask her out. They were perfect for each other. Through the years we had so many good memories with him. He was genuine and salt of the earth, an inspiration to all of us. He was funny and loving to everyone. My heart breaks that he is gone and his family has to go on without him. To Danny: you were a great man- You are with God in heaven now, and we will miss you. Thank you for being you. Love, Jeannie

Jan and I love both Danny and Charley. Jan and Charley have been life long friends and we truly enjoyed the time we traveled to LA and Sequoia NP and our visit with them in Boston. We met them in Boston in conjunction with them attending a wedding. I knew Danny was quite the fashionista because with his coat and tie, he also had wing-tip shoes. Unfortunately, one happened to be a golf shoe. Danny called us while we were out in the harbor and I had to have the front desk let him into our room so he could get my not-so dressy shoes (but at least they didn't have spikes).

We will miss Danny; a great guy.
